ive seen a lot of constipation/fiber posts today. one started up more as a spin off inside my other post.
but anyways. if i went and got fiber 1 bars or something like that, how long would it take to help release a bowl movement? i know some may find this as TMI, but really its just life.

ive been a little constipated this week but was able to go today. but i can tell i couldnt release it all.

Hmmmm, what about trying (don't know how to spell it) Medimucel? Or a bit of prune juice? Taking a good amount of Vitamin C will do it too! lol Plus it's good for you!

The time it takes depends on your body. Everyone processes things in a different amount of time. Some people are quick, others aren't. I'd estimate that it should take maybe a day - if you eat it tonight maybe the morning or tomorrow evening.

Just be careful not to over do the fiber as well. Too much at once can cause constipation. Also ensure you drink plenty of water to help keep things softer.

PS- you can also get psyllium husk capsules to help supplement your fiber intake, and they help make you feel full.
  • I started having off and on challenges after my 4th baby. I have been using psyllium husk powder religiously ever since. It's a very high fiber source. Take it with a LOT of water. It does take a few days to kick in. But once it does, this will be the last problem of this sort you ever have. In addition to that benefit, psyllium husk also absorbs fat and cholesterol out of your digestion before your body can. So it's good for your heart and digestive health combined.

I find that if I eat a good salad with a meal or as a meal that does the job for me......and the more water you drink the better, water is a natural laxative.

Nature's Path Psyllium Cereal. That has worked for me.

Psyllium is mainly used as a dietary fiber, which is not absorbed by the small intestine. The purely mechanical action of psyllium mucilage absorbs excess water while stimulating normal bowel elimination. Although its main use has been as a laxative, it is more appropriately termed a true dietary fiber and as such can help reduce the symptoms of both constipation and mild diarrhea. The laxative properties of psyllium are attributed to the fiber absorbing water and subsequently softening the stool. At the same time, this added bulk causes the stool to be better formed, which can reduce symptoms of diarrhea.[1] Psyllium is therefore able to promote regularity in bowel moments.

instead of a fiber type food, I would stick to natural fiber, eat lots of veggies and whole grains.....also be sure you are taking in enough water! I know that it is easy to forget, but water a key componet to moving things along, so to speak! For me Usually a bowl of oat meal for breakfast and lots of peppers (green/red bell peppers) at lunch and I am good by the end of the day!

The reason I say stay away from the bars, is that they are usually full of sugar and other unnatural ingredients, and really only have 3-4 g of fiber...Also be careful not to take too much as that will make you even more constipated!

Yeah I know I said it already, but really drink at the very least 2 liters of water daily

    Hope you feel better!

Okay so as I get older I get more comfortable talking about these things. It is so important to move those bowls and I suffered from IBS and severe constipation for years and years. What goes in must come out right? So throughout my quest to no longer be constipated, I have found that those fiber one bars didn't do anything for me but make me bloated! They are so packed with other things that if you suffer from constipation in the first place, they don't help. What helps me: Kashi cereal, beans, no dairy and no meat! Also have an apple in the morning (fruit should be eaten by itself), and eat some beans! I go now more in the five weeks since I've cut out meat from my diet in the past like five weeks since I have in like six months. I used to follow a high protein-low carb diet and it messed up my digestive system. So skip the fiber one bars. Go for raw fruits, veggies, beans and whole wheat breads and you pooping in no time! LOL!

Fiber One bars are great and they do keep you regular, however, they are not a laxative and will not produce a bowel movement in the way you are hoping! The magnesium citrite others have recommended is a good option for occasional constipation. Then I would definitely recommend incorporating Fiber One bars into your diet for maintainance. They are great; my kids even love them. Don't forget plenty of water too!

Hey Charlene! I have heard that Medimusal (I can't spell either) only "masks the problem and has other ingredients that can harm your body. It can help to relieve, but not fix. :)

I need 25g of fiber each day to keep regular. It's a puzzle everyday to get that much in while aiming for the 40/40/20. Raspberries are good for fiber, bran flakes, beans are really great, artichokes, lots of natural ways to get it in there. I'm big on 'power salads' too. I use Kashi GoLean cereal as a crunchy topping on my salads because of it's nutritional value, high fiber, and it's shelf stable. That and 2 cups of coffee every a.m.. I tried the Fiber One Muffins, they worked for me within a day, but they were 200 calories each, come in a pack of three, and I ate the other 2 just for fun later in the week. Good to have for an 'emergency' I guess, but they also have alot of junk in them too. I'm trying  to stay away from processed foods and additives. Hope you find what works for you!

Oddly, espresso does the trick for me. 2 shots, and I seriously have about 30 minutes until it works. Especially on a prtially empty stomach (about 30-40 minutes after a meal).

I find eating enough fiber does the trick, and when I am feeling backed up I have something like a burrito bowl: a beans + veggies do the trick ( a meal with about 12 grams of fiber) seems to work.
