I believe that the measurement "cup" is generally used in America/Canada.

Here in the UK I have previously used ounces/fluid ounces but now grams and millilitres are the norm. Can someone please explain how many grams or millilitres are in a cup.

Thanks

Yoou can buy a set of measuring spoons and they most often have the cups too. They usually come on a loop that you have to unhook to get each off. The ones i have have the usual tsp, tbsp etc plus 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup and cup.

I got mine from the 99p shop so they aren't expensive.

American and British cup measurements are different - American cups are 237ml and British cups are 250ml. So in terms of calories content there would be a difference anyway.

But different products will weigh different amounts - so a cup of rice is far heavier than a cup of flour.

Personally I find weights in grams easier to use, but most US recipes ask for cups. Safe to assume that when it says cup on this database that it means the American measurement. In the UK we tend to use weights (ounces or grams) in recipes. I have both sets of measuring cups depending on the recipe book I am working from!!!

    hope that helps!!!!

That's a pretty good site to tell you approximate weights for different foods in cups.

HAHA That's what I thought the question was going to be about. A cup is 8 ounces, there are 64 ounces in a gallon.
