The DH and I have decided to invest in home gym equipment because I'm the only one really using the gym membership, though I hate going there alone, especially when it's dark.
Do you have any suggestions for staple pieces to invest in? We're already planning on free weights and a bench. I have an aerobics step and a large ball. I'm also trying to find the best time to talk my mom into selling us her treadmill that collects dust.....
Any other suggestions?

I've got an elliptical a weight bench and free weights. That and my pilates tapes keep me going. My only regret is that my bench doesn't have the capability for me to lift with my legs.0

Check your local classifieds/craigslist for used dumbbells. I was able to buy a set from 2lbs-50lbs, two 75lbs., and a rack for around $200. I'd rather have my dumbbells than any other piece of equipment I own. Also, look for a nice power rack or squat rack so you can incorporate squats and other exercises safely.0

I find that the medicine ball is the one piece of equipment at the gym I use all the time. I'm considering getting one for home.
And if you can't get mom to kick you the treadmill, you should easily find one collecting dust in someone else's house. . .try craigslist, the classifieds, or garage sales. If that fails, look for a "play it again" sports (or something similar) I used to ( ) have a gym quality treadmill that I bought for 500. . .which seems like a lot, but new it would have been close to 2000. I had to sell it when I moved, for $200. . .and it was still in really good shape. . .0
