So I have seen the new commercials on tv about the "Toning" work out clothing(I think by nike not sure tho) and I am so curious if it really works like they say it does.

Now don't get me wrong, I am well aware that if I put on a pair of those shorts and sit on my butt for the next three weeks and eat fast food I know that I am not going to have a well toned tush!

But I am curious if they help at all with the toning. they have the shirts the shorts the pants. all that good stuff.

I work out atleast 4-5 times a week and I eat healthy. I am seeing results from my working out, but HEY! if they have created some miracle clothing to help aid in the toning process Im not going to pass on it!

but considering its expensive, I would like to know from people who have actually tried it, if its ANY different than any other work out gear.

I haven't seen the commercials so I'm wondering too.

I use compressions shorts to help me run. I am spanish and my butt shows it and when I run or try too I feel the reverberations from my butt which makes me CRAZY so I use the shorts to hold everything in place and boy does it help. lol

I highyl doubt that it works, if you ask me its a gimmick just like weight loss pills and the like. (shake weight anyone? lol) anyhow long story short fat loss can not be selective as much as we would like it to be. Usually the first place you gain is the last place you lose. So keep going with whats been working for you, remember its as much about enjoying the journey as getting to the goal.

I don't know how well they would work for toning but I thought they would be good for yoga to hold everything in whenyou are in some of the different poses.

these never claimed to make you lose fat.... just tone. you can tone targeted muscles just not targeted fat.

and that is what I am thinking that it is a gimmick.

Compression wear is more for stability and injury prevention than weight loss. I wear compression tights when i distance run because it helps "band" the muscles together, prevent jarring and provide enhanced stability. Also keeps you warmer by keeping your body heat.
  • I've never heard of them, interesting to research.

I think they just make you sweat more which helps in losing the water retention and this will make you look more toned after workouts.

  • Definitely sounds gimmicky. I did the other day try out one of those vibrational therapy things that you stand on. If you can find a place near you that has them.. try it out. It works your muscles involuntarily and in less 10 min, you feel like a dirty joke. =]
  • They sure do feel good. Nice and comfy. I was always a boxer guy until I needed compression shorts for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. They were so comfortable that I switched to boxer-briefs hoping for the same comfort. I've since bought a few of the compression shirts. They're comfy and wick away the sweat. It doesn't seem like it at first but when I sometimes work out in a regular t-shirt, it's drenched in sweat and I certainly feel more nasty. As for the compression clothing making you more toned, I don't buy it.

I have lost 83 pounds and I just sag everywhere.

I started wearing compression shorts and pants to give me support when I work out. NOT to help me lose weight but to help give me support. Just as I wear a bra so I don't end up having them sag to my knees.

I really feel that the compression wear has helped keep my skin from sagging even more and I certainly look much better in clothes!!

Nope that's wrong. No clothing is going to target muscles or help you "tone".

They are also recommended by plastic surgeons after liposuction to keep the skin from sagging as it shrinks to its new shape. I haven't had the surgery but do have several friends who have over the years.

Didn't Reebok (and others) lose a class action lawsuit over the bogus claims made for their "toning" shoes.....

If it sounds too good to be true.............

The "tone" of your muscle is it's degree of neuro-muscular activation. I'm seriously doubting that some fancy spandex is going to improve your mind-to-muscle link. I'm guessing that repeatedly activating that link by stressing it is what forces an adaption. I'm also sensing that that's not what you mean by muscle "tone"?

If you are talking about that godawful fitness industry sense of "toning" then that's going to be achieved by retention of existing lean body mass and reduction of fat tissue to reveal the muscles underneath. This is really a function of diet and some sort of resistance work. I'm sensing that, again, fancy spandex isn't going to achieve that.
  • I do wear compression socks after working out. It's supposed to help with recovery by improving circulation (I can't say definitively if it has made a difference, as I don't track my performance and recovery time closely enough). It is the same thing as what the elderly with poor circulation wear to keep blood from pooling in the extremities.

I wear padded compression undergarments along with my leathers for an added layer of padding between me and the tarmac when I go riding, or racing my bikes(motorcycles) ...
