Too much protein

I seem to be staying in my calorie range but going over my protein amount calculated. Could this be a problem for me? I like protein shakes because they are easy and I am not good at eating in the morning. I sometimes like them for lunch as well.
Any advice would be lovely!

    I saw an article about calculating how many protein, something like 0.5 to 1.0 gram per kilogram of body weight to maintain muscles; 1.5 to 2 grams if you are doing lots of weight training and want to build. Do you math to see what you need, don't rely on the MFP number.
  • Protein is good if you are trying to build muscle. It's better than over doing it in fat calories. I would try and not consistently over do it in the protein category though.
  • I have read many articles that same the same thing that atomdraco said, I eat way more than what MFP says I should since I am doing strength training as well!
  • I've been a serious competitive athlete for 9 years, there are ways to calculate how much protein someone should have a day depending on their body weight like these people have been saying.

    Personally, no matter what I weigh I try to get 100g over my bodyweight. Ex- if im 200lbs I'll aim for 300g of protein a day. Your body can only absorb/use about 30g in 1 sitting, BUT after physical activity or training etc the ability to absorb protein increases A LOT. So I try to take in close to if not 100g of protein immediately following a workout, you have a time slot of around an hour, the faster you can get the protein in your body following a workout the better. This is because (after training) your body will instantly snatch up all the protein and deliver it to your muscles, which are fatigued and have been broken down 'n' torn (tiny rips in the muscle fiber) and this is when protein is needed the most so it can begin rebuilding. BLAH BLAH BLAH Sorry I'm gettin off track. Excess protein that cannot be absorbed is simply disposed of which is why some people experience diarrhea when they begin drinking a lot of protein shakes.

    Exactly like elliot and atomdraco said, protein is a good thing. As long as you are not getting excess calories, any protein your body does not need, to repair muscle tissue use for energy, will be excreted. So don't worry about getting too much.

    Thanks for all the info everyone! I wasn't TOO worried about it but think I will try to keep the protein shakes for after my work outs. :smile:
