Calories Used Running C25K

I've just completed the first week of couch to 5k, and am loving it so far, though still finding it hard to believe that I could possibly go from being a complete non-runner to running 5k in just 9 weeks!
I don't have a heart rate monitor, and can't justify the expense. Is there anybody out there who has an HRM who has kept a record of calories expended for each run and would be willing to share?
Any data would be gratefully received, most especially from females roughly my own size (5' 2" and 125lb), but data from anyone at all would at least allow me to guesstimate rough figures.

There is an iphone app that I use for C25K. It has a GPS feature that is an additional $0.99. But worth adding. At the end of each run you can journal. In the journal you can record your weight. It then will calculate your Calories based on the GPS data and your weight. The app is by Bluefin Software, LLC and is $2.99.
Oh and the app lets you add your music and will chime and tell you when to run/walk.0 -
I am not a runner. Never ran anywhere in my life. I just completed week 6 and am running 25 min straight. I am not in you weight catogory. I do want to get a HRM too, but for now not in the budget. I go by the calories burned on my treadmill.
Probably not the most accurate.
Good luck.0 -
I would totally be willing to share. But I am taller and heavier than you. There are some really great HRM for not too expensive... Maybe look for some on Craigslist? I am 5'6'' and weigh 170
Anyway, this is a typical week 1 for me:

It really does work, but don't be afraid to repeat weeks if you feel the need. I think it actually took me about 12 weeks because I repeated a few weeks. I just finished the Bridge to 10K (the follow up to C25K), and can now run a full 6.2 miles in an hour! It's a six week program, and I didn't have to repeat any weeks. I never thought it possible either.0

I'm 5' 1" and 167 lbs so this will just be a rough guide, but here's my info.
C25K
W1, D1 30 mins, 250 calories
W1, D2 30 mins, 249 calories
W1, D3 30 mins, 249 calories
W1, D4 40 mins, 334 calories (added on a little extra running and walking as I was repeating a day)
W2, D1 30 mins, 300 calories
W2, D2 38 mins, 290 calories (I think from here on I started using heart rate monitor instead of the treadmill estimates)
W2, D1 36 mins, 340 calories
W3, D1 31 mins, 255 calories
W3, D2 35 mins, 282 calories
As you can see, I sometimes add on a little extra time so this won't quite line up exactly with the timing of the C25K. The extra time is usually split between brief runs and walks--usually adding on one or two intervals from that day's plan.
Hope this helps!0 -
Gesikale, I am using a C25K iphone app, but on an ipod touch, not a phone, so no GPS unfortunately :frown:
AZMomto3, thanks for the numbers, any idea how they would convert to calories?0 -
Miovlb6, that's exactly the kind of info I'm after, thanks very much! If anybody has any similar data for later weeks, please keep it coming!0

In the first set of numbers it shows a sum up/ calorie count.
You will notice that mine and the pp's are WAY different... It really just depends on your weight, how high you are getting your HR, and how hard you are pushing yourself to your own abilities.
Good luck!!0 -

I'm 5' and 140lbs and go by the calories on the treadmill, this gives me for week 1 about 127 - which is pretty much the same as a few less minutes jogging form the database
I'm not too sure how others get several hundred calories burnt, seems high to me but I am only going by what the machine tells me.
looking at the MFP database, you would have to run CONTINUOUSLY for 35 minutes at a whacking pace (6 minute mile) to be able to burn over 590 calories.
Does anyone know if the MFP database is linked to your own measurements or is a general thing?0 -

thanks - good to know. I guess the only real way to know actual calories burned is with an HRM.0 -
Miovlb6, that's exactly the kind of info I'm after, thanks very much! If anybody has any similar data for later weeks, please keep it coming!
I'll be doing C25K about every other day and my food/exercise diary is public, so you can look in to see how many calories I'm burning in future weeks. Feel free to add me as a friend if you'd like.0 -

Thank you, I'll do that. :happy:0
