Hey Ya'll,

I have been on MFP for almost a month now, I am just now, finally, doing this religiously and I feel SO much better about myself after already losing 3 lbs. I just recently started working with a personal trainer and while he has me stretching periodically through our workout as well as after our workout, I am waking up with major pains in my legs. I used to be a dancer and I also rowed (crew) for a couple of years in high school. I am now in my 4th year of college and just now started to work out more. I was wondering if anyone had any tips about preventing tender muscles from hurting so much the next day. Maybe special vitamins to take or even a special stretch strategy. Thanks!! :)

My endocrinologist suggested I take 250mg Magnesium every night and that has helped me tons! Potassium and magnesium rich foods such as bananas and potatoes may help, too.

I would research if stretching is putting you at risk for injury.

I used to get a lot of leg cramps during my college softball days.
Water and bananas. I would eat 2-3 bananas a day and it seemed to make a big difference!

I stretch my hamstrings at night. Just a gentle stretch to relax. Try soaking in a hot bath after your workouts, that always helps my muscles relax.I also take magnesium.

Sounds gross, but just learned about this in exercise phys. There are some colleges that use pickle juice and it has been studied and it seems to give them an improvement. I have also heard soaking in ice cold water. No matter what DOMS will hit though is what I pretty much learned from studying that topic. Just keep it up and it will decrease!!

an old bartenders trick, have a glass of milk & a banana b4 bed.
  • Having some protien after/during your workout could help with the soreness. If your having cramps then you could need potassium as a few others have said. You might also need sodium or electrlites. Also, when you get a cramp, drinking pickle juice can stop it. Got that tid bit from the football teams physical therapist in Highschool, and it works. Oh, one more thing, having too much potassium can cause cramps.
  • Thank you guys so much! I always knew about the banana trick but never pickle juice. I love pickles! Haha, thank you for your help!!
  • Is there a specific brand of magnesium you are taking? Thank you for your help!

I buy the NatureMade brand from Kroger/Wal-Mart. It has done wonders for my menstrual cramps and morning stiffness, too :)
  • Thank you. You have helped me out so much!
