I would think it should be fine as long as you are drinking a calorie free mineral water. If you are drinking one of the flavored ones they can be full of sugar so yes they are as bad for you as drinking a soda.
I drink mineral water instead of soda as I realized it is the bubbles that I crave not necessarily the soda. I stick to calorie free & try to find low sodium ones as well.
I found this online if it helps...

yes yes avoid artificial sweeteners! I forgot to mention that part. I don't consume anything that contains artificial sweeteners as a personal preference, I sometimes forget that others still use those nasty things.
Also try having regular water with slices of lemon or some other fruit in it. You may find you enjoy it more then. You should not limit your water consumption to only mineral water as that could be bad for you as you are not getting some of the good things like fluoride that are in regular old tap water.0 -
The speed of discussion on these boards amazes me.
Going a bit off topic, but artificial sweeteners, taste enhancers (think MSG), artificial colors, partially hydrogenated anything, corn syrup, are just bad regardless of any weight goals.
Oh and there's some debate about fluoride too.0 -
