Post-workout nausea

I have this mentality that was instilled in me as a collegiate athlete that if my workout is less then an hour it isn't worth doing... that being said, I think I've been pushing myself too hard:

I'm on a 2 lb/wk goal which leaves me at 1200 cal/day. I'll be on track to hitting my calorie goal with a ~400 calorie breakfast and ~400 calorie lunch. I'll workout for an hour after work and burn 5-650 calories which leaves me at a very low total calorie consumption but I'll feel great until I get home and a wave a nausea will hit me and I wont be able to eat. I'll usually plan on eating a large dinner to catch up on calories but I'll feel so sick all I can do is curl up in bed. Its been really frustrating so I've decided that on workout days I'll just plan on eating more BEFORE workouts instead of after. Well, yesterday I did this and ate about 600 calories for lunch and I still felt sick after. It is very interesting to me because I was an athlete for so long and never experienced this. Then again, I was probably eating 2-3000 calories a day!!!

I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this or has any suggestions.

Best regards,

  • you should definitely find a snack that is low in calories, high in fiber and eat it in the car on the way home from the gym or when you get home...

Definitely have some sort of snack before and after your workout. Make sure you're drinking planty of water too.

Have you tried working out in the morning instead? I'm one that feels sick to my stomach when I workout at night, or after I've eaten. I have to workout first thing in the morning.

I had problems when I first started running with being sick after. I would eat something bland and make sure I drank a lot of water.
Over time it eventually went away.
From what I've read it's just your body's way of telling you the work out is too much for the lower calorie intake.

You're likely not eating enough or hydrated enough, pretty simple.

Try a small snack about an hour before you work out (banana or fruit + some nuts, for example), then get something high-protein for immediately after (a whey shake is fine, or anything else easy). That will take about 300 extra calories, but it seems like you can easily fit it if you're burning that much. You don't need a huge dinner, you need to make sure you have those nutrients surrounding the workout

How long is it between your lunch and when you go to the gym? Maybe by that time your stomach is "close to empty" and that's why you aren't feeling well.

My trainer told me to have a protein shake 30 minute before working out with her and then a snack as soon as I get in the car to leave. Normally I have a piece of fruit or string cheese. I never want to eat it right after the workout but I do and end up feeling much better. May be give that a shot???
