Calories Burned Ascending/Descending 1 Stair (step)???

I read in a journal that the ascending calories burned for one step (15cm) is 0.11 kCal, and descending it is 0.05 kCal. I really find this hard to believe. If this were true, walking your dog at 3 mph would burn more calories than climbing stairs.

I know it has to do with your weight, speed, etc... But I ascended and descended a flight of 29 steps, 25 times and I'm curious to know how many calories I burned.

I refuse to believe I only burned about 120 calories in 30 minutes of sweating.

    Hi Paul! It's hard to figure out how many calories we really burn. We all burn differently, and I believe myfitnesspal over-estimates when it comes to calories. Your best bet is to use a heart rate monitor with a calorie counter. I think that'll give you the most accurate reading. Sorry I'm not much help regarding the stairs though.

    Though this reply is way after the fact, I was wondering the same thing myself. I came across this, though I'm wondering how accurate it is.

    It seems to me that stair climbing (NOT running/jogging up stairs) would burn many more calories than simply walking. I would guess that climbing stairs would be roughly equivalent to jogging at 6mph. Though I'm no specialist!
