OK, I'm going to do my first 5k fun run on April 2nd. I'm going to walk it, I know I'm not ready to attempt running. I need to set a reasonable time goal for myself. Right now it takes me about 50 minutes to walk 3 miles and a 5k is 3.1. Of course, I'm walking the neighborhood and with the dog, so between the dog and friendly neighbors it tends to slow me down. I was thinking 40 minutes. Any suggestions?

  • I know you said you aren't ready to attempt running, but you should check out the Couch to 5K workout plan. It gradually prepares you for a 5K run.

I say jog and walk it ---- tons of people do that there. Just jog slowly for a while and then take a break and walk etc..... I think you can google "5k walking time" to get some estimates. The last one I did, the walkers (not the speed walkers) came in around 50 minutes it seemed. The couch 2 5 k program is amazing
it helped me, I had to do it twice, but it clicked completely once I got a heart rate monitor

Couch to 5K. It's a great program and should have you at your goal if you start now!

That sounds fair. You may find that with others around you doing the fun run too you may go quicker.
Also check out www.c25k.com It's a couch to 5km running program designed to get you off the couch & running 5km in 9 weeks. I'm definitely not a runner & I'm trying it.

I totally agree with checking out the C25K program. Even if you weren't completely through it by your event it would help you get ready to run in spurts and speed up your time! I think 45 minutes might be doable, but my first one running was 41 minutes.. second one was 36! 12 minute miles is a decent running speed, 15 minute miles is a pretty good walking speed. If you run intervals through it I could see someone finishing in the 40-45 range pretty easily!

Good luck! Even walking it is an accomplishment!!!

I am doing my first 5K on April 2nd too here in Kansas. I am going to walk/jog it. I have started the C25K program and my only plan is to not go over an hour. I think that is a good start. I would like for it to take 50 minutes, but we will see. Good luck on your 5K!

I have done 5 5K's and am just know considering jogging some of it. These races are no joke! I can walk 3.1 miles in about 45 - 50 minutes. Every race is different. Time of year, and race route make all the difference. Just remember to stretch and have fun.

Also HIGHLY recommend Couch to 5K. When you're ready you can create a very reasonable customized running plan at runnersworld.com ... but I'd give myself 8-10 weeks on C2-5K first.

I have my 2nd 5K this month (first was 3 years ago, though). Another next month. Then a 10K on May 7.

Whatever you do, though, walk/run/jog/crawl, congrats for getting out there!

GREAT JOB. Know that you can walk and run the 5K. Just do the best that you can, however I will tell you that if you begin running, you will feel stronger and more empowered.
