Everytime i go to the gym i see the same thing over and over.... women lifting weights the wrong way. They are literally swinging their weights back and forth with horrible posture , no control what so ever .

I get tempted to say something JUST to help them out but i feel some ppl get offended or embarressed. What do you guys do when you see this?

I personally would appreciate it if someone was to advise me I was lifting incorrectly. If that will help me to lift and get a better response to it and to also help me from hurting my back or whatever. If's it's done in a nice way -professional gesture I think it would be accepted...

Ahh I was SO tempted to do the same the other day! If I see that lady doing that again I think I'm going to have to say something! I know as an ex-athlete that what she was doing could result in her throwing her back out! & when you look around 60....that's probably not a good thing to be doing :S

I'd be o.k. with someone offering me advice if they see me doing something wrong while weight lifting. Even better if they demonstrated it so I could see it in the correct motion.

Ask if you can offer some advice. If they say yes - do it in a nice, non-condescending way. Almost anyone would appreciate that.

If they say no, they have to be willing to accept the consequences. It seems ridiculous to most of us, but some people don't WANT to hear the help.

I wouldn't mind be corrected! if I gymed, which I don't by the way, I run outdoors! but see nothing wrong in getting help if the advice forthcoming for my own good!

I hurt the tendon in my knee bad doing weighted squats with the wrong form. I even asked the gym guys to help me to do it right, but I wasn't paying them as a personal trainer, so they just agreed I was doing ok. I wish someone would of stepped in and said something . . . depending on how the person came across, I probably would've been fine with it. If I ever decide to do lifting seriously again, I will hire someone!!

Honestly....I'd probably be embarrassed...and a little offended if someone corrected me. BUT in the long run I'd be glad they did because if I'm not doing it right then I'm not getting a good work out, and I'll likely injure myself. I think if they are really doing it wrong, you should say something, and if they get all pissy, well you were just trying to help.

Are there any personal trainers in the gym? I would ask them to advise the members. Sometimes people take advice better from the professionals.

I have mixed feelings about this. One side of me says, Yeah! Go ahead and let them know what they are doing wrong if you know for certain they are putting themself at risk of serious physical injury. The other side of me says, If they don't know what they are doing it is their own fault and they should not be there. Before I started my strength training program I consulted with a trainer (with a degree and good credentials) because I did not want to injure myself. Now I go to the gym 3x a week and I know exactly what I am doing and guys will tell me "perfect form--nice job--it's nice to see women in here that know what they are doing!" My one bad experience happened recently when I was doing dead lifts and a very large muscle-y man (who I have nicknamed Monster) came up behind me and started touching my hamstrings and giving me advice on how to include that muscle group. I did not appreciate that AT ALL! So bottom line, if the girl look like she is trying but isn't "getting it" maybe recommend she see a trainer because if she is doing THAT exercise wrong then you just giving her tips on THAT exercise isn't going to fix the overall lack of knowledge about muscles and the various muscle groups. =)

Funny you only see women do this??? So you never see men do this? That's really quite peculiar (unless you're talking about a bunch of girls in a body pump class rather than women who really lift!)

If anything the women in my gym who lift heavy are absolute veterans at what they do and fashists for good form.

It's the skinny guys who are rather optimistic with their barbells that usually have the rubbish form.
  • I'm the same way, I wanna say something...but I don't wanna seem like a know-it-all, so I keep my lip zipped...but I would certainly appreciated if someone gave me some tips, clues and advice when I'm lifting with improper form.

I'd feel a bit presumptous telling someone else "you're doing it wrong!" I'd certainly not feel confident about showing them how to lift the right way. I try to copy the class instructor as much as possible, and concentrate on my own technique. And yes I inwardly roll my eyes at those in the class who obviously aren't listening. But I'd feel awful if some other gym member pointed out my errors to me. OK if it was one of the trainers/ staff.

Might have been worth mentioning, as most people here don't seem to be attending single sex gyms.

When I first started @ the gym almost 3 years ago I wasn't sure of much of anything. I didn't have the right form or the right weight or anything. Then as ppl corrected me (mostly the men) I now get compliments on how clean my form is. I think they would appreciate and learn and in the end be thankful if someone assisted them with weight trainin properly.

The way I look at it, if I am there doing all the motions, I would want to get the most bang for my buck. If someone wants to give me some advice, I am all for it. I may or may not follow depending on my analysis of the advice. I have made friends with several of the trainers in my gym, and they know to stop me when they see me doing something wrong. They do and I am always appreciative of the advise.

I would LOVE the advice if I were doing it! As long as it isn't in a rude way I would appreciate it.

it's not just women. guys are just as bad. whenever i see people using their whole body to do bicep curls, doing quarter squats where their knees are so far ahead of their toes (this one just hurts to watch) or lat pull downs to their stomach i'm tempted to say something but i never do. i'd hate for someone to get all offended and have it turn into a big scene. i wish the people that work at the gym would say something, but i guess they don't want to offend anyone either.
