If you're a runner, how do you manage your appetite? I am hungry all the time. I've recently increased my mileage and my appetite seems to be non-stop:grumble: Do you have any tricks to keep your appetite in check? Are there any go to snacks that seems to help keep you satisfied?
Thanks, I want to keep running, but I don't want to start gaining weight....unless it's muscle

I am not a runner, but you need to focus on food with a lot of fiber that keep you full longer. I know that beans will keep you full so if you dont already eat them, add them and see if it helps!!!0

Your metabolism is speeding up! I get SO hungry when my training increase. I just suggest spreading out your meals a bit more (I eat every 3 hours or so...just a few hundred calorie nibbles of high quality foods, i.e. NOT 100 calorie packs) and drinking LOTS of water.
Feel free too look at my diary for ideas :-)
Good luck with the training!0 -
I used to run with a runner (she's ran marathons and even compited to get into the Boston marathon) She would always recommend fillin up on carbs the day before a big run then eat light like whole wheat toast and pb the morning before running. She'd always be eating carbs. And damn she is really really skinny!!!! With a six pack abs!0

Hi Iculian,
Breaking up the meals or getting healthy snacks. Most marathoners will eat 3 meals with 3-4 snacks per day. What works for me is splitting my meals. Instead of eating a full breakfast at 8 and a full lunch at noon, I split the time and the meals in half. So half my breakfast at 8, the other half at 10. Half lunch at noon and other half at 4. Since im done with my day and workout by 8, i just eat the full meal.
You can use the food search to find high protein/high carb snacks if my regiment doesn't work for you.

Are you eating enough?
That's my question. When I was training for my half it was difficult to eat all my calories, but got close most days.
I know that's a hot button topic here. But if you are running, especially for distance you need to eat. Or you WILL lose muscle.
And even though I'm not running long distances now...I still eat "something" once an hour. It's easy when you have a desk job.0 -
Yep, very normal. Your metabolism is increasing therefore it's telling your body you need to eat. Hopefully, you are eating 3 meals a day and snacks in between. Funny enough I just told my frend the same thing regarding being more hungry lately. Banana's have worked for me, they are very filling. However, I dont consume more than two a day. Hope this helps??? I am looking forward to one day jogging a 5k completely, another thing to add to my vision board! ;0) BTW, congratulations on the weight loss and maintaing.... Maintence is harder than acquisition!! Great job.0

Are you eating enough?
Too much, I keep going over , and I'm in Maintenance. So I can't afford to go over. I've eaten over 2300 calories the last two days. Yesterday that wasn't to bad, because I earned 585 + 1550 to miantain, but the day before I was over 700 calories over and I was soo hungry. This has been going on for the last 2 weeks. I've gained 2 lbs, so I figured it was time to get some help.
I believe in fueling my body, I just don't want to end up gaining because I think I need to eat.0 -
Well.. make your diary public so we can take a look at the things you're eating0

Thank you everyone. It sounds like I should have more frequent snacks/ meals. I'll work on adding a banana in and some high fiber/high carb foods in like beans.
I think I need to stay away from sugar. I think the dreaded candy drawer at work is a trigger and it's empty calories that do nothing for me. Hopefully eatting more often and higher quality foods will get me back on track.
Thanks again for all of your help!!0 -

I made my diary viewable. I feel like I should give you a disclaimer. I visted my parents house this weekend where my mom had made Monkey bread and Apple pie. I did get 1 run in, but I'm wondering if the more junk you eat the hungrier you get? As soon as I looked back over my diary I realized maybe it's not the running, maybe it's the lack of quality food and nutrients? Lightbulb! :laugh:0 -

Yes, I was just going to say this. If that candy had been a salad of equal calories, you would have been satisfied.0 -
Maybe try incorporating more protein in your diet. I've read you should aim to have as much as 30g of protein per meal and perhaps lowering your carbohydrate intake as well. Your body will burn through those simple carbs (refined sugars, flours) very quickly, especially if your workload is increasing as well, so it's not surprising you're getting hungrier. Perhaps try something like having a protein shake about 30 - 60 minutes before your run to provide a more stable energy source.0

I'm seeing the same thing -- looks like you routinely come up way short on protein. Protein will make you feel more full and will help you with your training.0

OK, so protein and better choices:bigsmile: I can do that! Thank you everyone for helping me get refocused!

You are doing great! I had been feeling really hungry too, mostly due to increased exercise so I started drinking WAY more water. Like at least 10-12 glasses. It has helped me feel full and my skin looks way better too. I think its easy to get distracted by treats when you are exercising more because you can rationalize the extra calories by saying you went for a run or whatever.0
