I know nuts are good to have in your diet but I can't seem to stop eating them once I even have a few and that can really add on the calories. Does anyone have any suggestions or better alternatives (calorie-wise) ?

    Use a food scale.
Count out the nuts and put them in a ziplock bag.
Walk away from the main container.

Trader joes has individual packages of nuts/ trail mix, you can try that and just eat one package at a time :)

I do what the lady above does. I measure and put the rest away. I like to mix them with dried cranberries, which I also carefully measure out

I measure my nuts out with a food scale. Almonds, for example, are 100 cal for 17 to 18 g.
If you don't have the self control to buy a large bag and measure out single-servings, then buy pre-measured single-serving bags. Emerald is one brand that does that (they make 100 cal packs). They are more expensive, though, so I prefer measuring my own.

Also, try eating them with other things, not just by themselves. I like adding nuts to oatmeal, salads, etc.

1/2 cup of pistachios (in shells) is only 170 calories...compared to half a cup of cashews which is like 360.

Maybe go for pistachios to eat more for your punch? I measure out a serving and that's it. Close the bag. But after 1/2 cup of pistachios (with shells) I don't really want more.

When I come home with almonds and such, I weigh them out and place them in individual snack bags. When I am done I put the empty bag back into the basket in the cabinet so I have it for the next time.

I have found that I just can't eat nuts. They don't work for me in moderation! Instead I try snacking on string cheese sticks or beef jerky. They are much safer alternatives for my self-control!

Anything that comes in a multi-serving package (I buy my almonds in a 1kg bag) is portioned out into serving sizes when it comes into the house, the bag of almonds lasts a while so I don't portion it ALL out immediately, but I've got glass canisters to put it in, portion a week out into my smallest mason jars, refill them as needed and when I see the glass canister getting low I know its time to buy another 1kg bag.

Same if I bring a big bag of chips into the house, haven't lately but it's at least portioned when it comes in, on the scale it goes and into baggies that I will keep re-using for chips.

Watch for sales I got my 125mL mason jars for cheaper than I can buy a 12-pack of stickers to go on the jars, under $2 for 12 jars at the end of canning season clearout, bought a lot, wish I had caught some of the bigger jars, but on a plus side if I buy spaghetti sauce now I make sure it comes in a mason jar so I'll repurpose that to my canning for next year.
  • I use the buy in bulk and seperate method. I always keep a bag in my purse and car. To be honest though, I eat nuts all day long and it has not hurt my weight no one bit. I don't even measure what I put in the bags... well, just a fist full, if that counts as a measurement. I add them to my recipes, salads, eat them as a snack with fruit.... I'm over on fat every single day. But then again, I don't eat animals or gluten, so I can afford it.
