Weigh ins - a sense of perspective

I've been weighing myself a couple of times a day this week just to get a sense of how much my weight fluctuates.

The range is 3-4 lb a day

Some facts:

In a 30 minute hard work I 'lost' one lb - I'm pretty sure that was all water!

a medium sized beaker of water weights one lb

Without being crude, I suspect using a rest room causes 1 or 2 lb variance as well.

Just keep this in mind if you weigh yourself once a week: watch the trend over time - or be mega consistent with your habits before weigh in: even a cup of morning tea with make you 'gain' a lb!

That's usually why the recommended weigh-in time is first thing in the morning before any intake and after any voiding of bladder and/or bowels, wearing the same kind of attire or nothing.

I'm very consistent with my weigh in. I weigh myself every monday morning about the same time every week. I get up, go to the bathroom, strip for the shower, and then weigh myself. Hopefully, that will keep my weight as accurate as possible.

I found this out yesterday! I always weigh myself first thing in the morning after using the restroom. When I did so yesterday I had gained .4 pounds. I then worked out and weighed myself again and LOST 1.9. Crazy.
  • i have noticed a trend as well.... When I wake up in the morning, I pee, weigh myself and drink a glass of water. I then go back to sleep for an hour, I wake up go pee and weight myself again and I found, I am typically 1lb less the second time I wake up and weigh....

I weigh myself every morning (after I pee and while I'm nekkid) and track and graph it (along with my deficit). I can vary up to 5-6 pounds in a day and over a week, but ultimately the "trend" is right where it should be based on my deficit.

This morning was wild. First number was 166.6. Which was a GOOD number. So I got off and got back on. Now it was 165.5 Hmmph. So I got back on. 166.6. Again - 167 and again 167. So I figure it's my scale and/or an uneven floor and went with the first number :).

I'm at a healthy weight. I do weigh every morning. I see a regular fluctuation pattern. My weekends are a little more lax so sometimes I can see an 'up' on Monday but usually back to normal by Wednesday.

Workouts will definitely make you lose water: for every 1g of glycogen stored there are 3g of water. We deplete those glycogen stores when working out...no wonder I have to pee right after working out!

Being female - TOM: 2-3lbs over night gain!. Once again this goes down over the next few days.

A high sodium dinner - weight is up the next morning.

This week: TOM so up to 125lbs. This morning I got up and peed and weighed (in tank top and skivvies): it said 125. I hopped in the shower and weighed again after I got out (no wet head). 123.8.

It's amazing to watch the patterns. Love that digital scale.

I got over my number obsession a while back. If you have a tendency to get obsessed with the number, stay away from it.

Same here. I like to see how my choices of food and exercise affect my daily "gain/loss" and sometimes try to predict whether I'll have a big weigh-in the next day.

I know weighing daily is certainly not for everyone, but I personally feel like it keeps me on track. Even if I have disappointing days, the overall weekly trend has always been right in line with the goals I set through MFP.
