Does anyone know how many calories you burn in a 60-min Zumba class? The one I go to is medium-high impact and I am definitely sweating a good bit when I'm done...

Depends on your age, height, weight, and percent muscle mass. Log it under low impact aerobics or dancing for the site.

Well, I haven't been to an actual Zumba class but I do have the dvds that they advertise on TV and the one titled "Cardio Party" is about 50 mins long and I normally burn about 520-540 calories when I do this particular dvd (I wear a HRM while doing it), but every body is different, so if it's in your budget I would purchase a HRM just so you can have a good idea of how may calories you are burning.

I use my hrm as well and i average 550-600 calories. But they say you can burn from 600-1000 calories a hour in the book. So not too sure sorry.

I went online and found the average amount of calories for 60 minutes of Zumba...I think it was like 600 something. I just created my own exercise entry for it. Type in Zumba and then it will probably say.."no results found" . Scroll to the bottom and it will say "Can't find what you're looking for. Add an exercise to the database". Just enter in the info you find online and it will be saved in your exercise database.

What brand of HRM do you recommend?? I'm always skeptical and always wonder how accurately HRMs measure calories so I want to be sure to get a "good" one....one that I can trust what it is telling me. Any recommendations?

Zumba is not "low impact". It is super fast paced and intense.

I have two i have just the watch and then the watch and chest strap both NB. I heard that the ones with the chest strap are more accurate. Alot of people say POLAR is best. I tried to research but it so confusing. LOL>

It is very confusing, but I have also heard that the ones with the chest strap are more accurate, I have a POLAR FT4 and it seems pretty accurate to me, after doing each of the workouts a couple of times the calorie counts are pretty close each time.

Today was the first time I wore a HRM in my highest impact Zumba class. My heart rate stayed between 153 -180 for most of the class and I burned 617 cals in a 60min class. I am 5'5 , 232 lbs right now, but have been working out hard for the last year.

Like the others recommend- you'll need a HRM to accurately measure how many cals. I found an equation on Livestrong.com to calculate calories burned... its: (.4472 x Heart Rate - .05741 x Weight - .074 x Age - 20.4022) x Time (Length of workout)/ 4.184 = Cals Burned. According to that equation I burn about 600-700+ cals per 60 minute session of Zumba. I push it hard though and have a high heart rate while doing Zumba. I hope this can help!
