What are some odd folk remedies (aka: home remedies) you personally use and swear by?

Here are some of mine:

HICCUPS
Raise your left arm up, stand/sit tall and rest your left forearm on your head. Bye-bye hiccups! Works for me EVERY TIME.

SNEEZING
Without tilting your head, look directly up until the urge passes. It helps, for some reason, if you can look at a light.

CALF CRAMPS
DON'T bend your foot down. I know it's instinctual but, trust me. Point your toes UP toward your knee. This elongates the calf muscle, quelling the cramp!

Your turn!

Ingrown toenail: cut a v shape in the center of the nail and don't cut the sides.
Garlic smell on fingers: rub fingers on stainless steel.
Static cling in your skirt: run a wire coat hanger along the inside.

Bacon or sausage grease for burns.

Umm... let's see here, what else? Oh yeah, my granny used to rub okra slime on bug bites. I can't remember if it worked, but she sure enjoyed doing it. She could have been senile.

    Drink warm water for hiccups.

My momma used to say that if you held a penny between your knees it would prevent pregnancy.

She also said it was bad luck to turn left. It took forever to get any place when she was driving.

I think she may have been senile too.

I lived in Asia for a few years and these are some of the very simple remedies I learned for nausea and/or upset stomach. Also helped me get through morning sickness in both pregnancies:

    - Hot water (I know, simple right? Extremely effective for me)
    - Smell of ginger (yes, just the smell, deep breath people) This works especially well for nausea

LOL. This is what I do for a sneeze:

To induce: Look directly at a light source
To suppress/make the urge disappear: Pull your earlobe. (Strange, i know! But it works everytime)
  • Rub salt and lemon juice over your hands to get rid of strong smells such as garlic or fish.

This also helps you locate those pesky papercuts that you didn't know you had

I can vouch for the ginger thing. I have a cheapy mini-set of baking spices (ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg). Tummy was doing flips one day for some unknown reason so I sprinkled 1/2 a tsp. of the ginger powder into a bottle of sparkling water, added some lemon juice and honey for taste, shook it up and drank it. Worked like a charm! It made some CRAAAAZY bubbles in the bottle, though.
