10,000 steps or 5 miles?

I have been trying to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. I have read online that it should be equivalent to 5 miles, but my 10,000 steps are only a little over 3 miles. I was wondering what is more important? Walking 5 miles a day or walking 10,000 steps a day. (5 milles for me is over 14,000 steps)

I've always felt that the standard was a bit too generic-- as every person has a unique stride. So as you say, one person's 10K steps will not be 5 miles, but another's may very well be... I think it's more important to simply be meeting your own personal goals.. and making new ones. so you do 10K a day now..but maybe in 2 -3 weeks you're up to 13K a day..and so on0
