Hey all! I was just wondering if someone could suggest some strength training exercises to do at home. What are the best ones?

Also, if I were to go to a gym, what machines/exercises should I focus on for the best strength training there?

Thanks!

I just found this website thought a post on the forums yesterday: http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Most of the exercises are done with body weight, so you don't need to buy a lot of stuff. I'm going to try to incorporate some of her exercises with my other stuff.

Not sure about at home, but in the gym I do leg press, chest press, shoulder press, rowing machine and lateral pull downs. These have been set by trainers the last twice I've asked them to create a program for me based on what I want to achieve (lose weight, increase tone, increase fitness), along with some cardio work.

  • If you want to train at home and get the most from your time as far as exercise goes your best exercise are pushups and squats to start. Both work the full body. As you get stronger you can make the moves more advanced. If you are in a bit better shape, get a kettlebell. Doing just the average kettlebell swing will help burn a ton of calories and activate your core muscles. Builiding muscle strength will help you burn fat faster and keep it off. Try and work up to doing 100 push ups in a round. Whether its 10 sets of 10 or 20 sets of 5. Keep at it and you'll feel the difference quickly. Don't worry if you can't it will take a long time to get there. I've been working on this for a while and still haven't hit 100. If you have dumbells you can add all sorts of great full body exercise. At the gym you'd want to do the leg press, bench press, cable rows and lat pulldowns to start off slowly. I wouldn't do it more than every other day.

Check out menshealth.com, womenshealthmag.com and oxygenmag.com - these are the website for those magazines and you can find good routines there. You can also check your local library for the book "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" which is very good. If you are in to DVDs, my workout of preference is ChaLEAN Extreme, although others like Jillian Michaels.

    Good luck!

My boyfriend and I are doing Power 90 right now. It's definitely helping to build up my strength, and we're only on day 17 as of today.
