I, too, am a peeper...and I just want to say....I hate it when people throw towels over their numbers. Come on...why you have to ruin my fun? You covering up those little red numbers isn't helping anyone!!! We should all just share and share alike.

I have a treadmill at home, not just because of the "peepers" because I hate being judged/compared to, period. Staring people make me what to ask them "What ARE you staring at?". I feel like if I am in a Gym enviroment, it's only to be the butt of someone joke . If I catch the wind of it (And I have!!) I'll tell them exactly where to go. Self-esteem issues can you tell.... I know. I'll hide at home for now Thanks!

Now if my tax check would come so I can get it fixed I'd actually be happy!!!

To each thier own, Be Happy! Lose it at/on your pace :flowerforyou:

I posted this thread before I even read your post here. Please check it out, the gym isn't as scary as people think. :flowerforyou: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/188766-for-those-who-are-nervous-to-join-a-gym

Aw, I'm really sorry. I didn't intend it as a "make fun of others on the treadmill" thing, but purely to see if I was odd for doing it and odd for looking for competition. I guess I just get motivated by others. Please don't feel like you can't go to the gym. I don't judge anyone, there will always be someone stronger, skinnier, prettier, hipper, taller, etc than me. Big hugs!! I know it sounds totally wonky, but if you believe you look good exercising, then you WILL.

I peep. It's a compliment. Today this older women was on the elliptical next to me talking on the phone and keeping the same pace I had to know how long she had been on there, 40 mins and still going strong, she was inspirational.
I also cover mine up not so people can't look so I am not staring at the time, but if anyone is ever curious they can just ask me I am proud of what I do even if it isn't all that impressive it is to me.
  • I haven't ever noticed someone peeking at my speed. I think that I would be put off if they did. I would feel like they were judging me and, frankly, I am probably not in their class.

I don't really peep but I will occassionally glance, purely out of curiosity. As for being peeped at, I don't mind.. I haven't noticed anyone peeping, usually too focused on what I'm doing and have the iPod blasting.

I compete with my stationary bike. I enjoy calling her mean names when she tells me to slow down.

I suppose I've done this, but my motivation is usually to see what level of resistance/incline someone at a certain fitness level is doing regularly. My logic is that if I do what that other person does, perhaps I'll be in the same shape as that person, after a while. Sort of a "calibration".

    Firstly... I hate treadmills.

I normally run outside. Some people I overtake... likewise I get overtaken by others... It's just life and to be honest it doesn't bother me either way.

But I will resort to treadmills when it's too wet or too icy outside and I need to do speed reps. I get "peeped" at but I tend not to peep, because, quite frankly I'm not interested in what the person next to me is doing.

I go to the gym with a structured plan of what I need to do and that's what I do. I wouldn't change that plan because of whatever the person next to me is doing in terms of their pace or distance run. Likewise if someone wants to kill themselves next to me they're welcome to it but I wouldn't understand why?

The above was supposed to be in quotes (not working for me today..

Don't be sorry, I was speaking from personal experience. I am sorry, I didn't mean that anyone here does that - I think that it is going to be funny to someone and I will be at home. I get the motivation aspect of it. Please don't be sorry - I get it..... I just had to vent my feelings  all good here...

Let 'em look! LOL. I find that there are 2 kinds of "peepers"

    1. People who need to see that they are doing better than someone else to motivate themselves (snotty peepers, shall we say...)
    2. People are genuinely curious. Some people look around trying to watch people who look like they know what they are doing trying to figure out what THEY are supposed to be doing or for new ideas. Especially if you're doing something unusual looking, (adding punches or going backwards, doing treadmill pull-ups) you can definitely expect some curious peepers haha.

When I was going to the gym, I was always looking at what people were doing, it was more of the people working with trainers and doing crazy stuff, I was very curious! I wouldn't look over to the next treadmill though to see what speed and all they were doing, I knew I was just a walker and I was fine with that. lol.

I'm a subtle peeper.. I can't help but compare myself to others. If I am going faster, it gives me more motivation to keep kicking butt. If I'm going slower, it gives me a goal to reach.

Now, the man with the long legs going 9mph for an hour straight.. Goal dismissed. ;)

Haha! Yuck. But I rarely run on a treadmill anymore, so I don't have to worry about treadmill "issues." Being outside is so much better. The only caveat is when it's too icy or snowy outside to run.
I thought this was going to be a post about the creepy men that pretend to exercise on the bikes behind the treadmills to 'peep' at all the women in running shorts. ;)

yep i peep. well i do almost 3 hr at a time on it every day so there is realy nothing to do but look around. i set my tm and cover everything but cal and dis. not to stop people but when you have 99min to go seeing it sucks. but i belive tm are made for everyone to see the numbers or they would not be so danm big. i think if they took the roof off the gym people in the space station would see it. i know we all do it. but to look and to stare is two different things

I own a treadmill so I have no one to peep. I have been on one at the gym though.

I've never noticed anyone peeping and I never peep. I could care less. That's just me though.

I do giggle a bit when I see people "win" the treadmill war of who can go faster/longer. I actually do a full body circuit that has about four 3 minute intervals of cardio. So I might jump on the treadmill (of bike, or elliptical, or whatever) and go pretty hard for 3 minutes then move on to my next strength training exercise. So, I guess people are "beating" me all the time :)
