Lent 2011

Hi! As no one seems to have started one yet, I thought I'd try starting a Lent thread.
As a fairly new Christian, brought up in a country where a lot of people do keep Lent in some way, I was wondering about good ways to make it about Jesus, not me. Any suggestions?

I've worked out what I'm going to do for Lent: give up MFP!
Don't get me wrong, I don't think mfp is bad, but Jesus didn't give up only the bad things by fasting, but the good things too. Mfp helped me lose the weight I wanted to, and now it's keeping me from putting it all back on, but as Lent is about controlling yourself, to a certain extent, perhaps I should remove my mfp crutch, just for 40 days, and not weigh myself either. When I would have registered calories, I'll read a bible passage instead.
I hope everyone with Lent goals of whatever type, reaches them.0 -
I'm actually giving up all fast-food for lent. I think that this will be really hard for me but I'm gonna have to stick it out, cause ya can't hide a cheat from the big man upstairs!0

Well said! Although he will forgive you, perhaps easier than you forgive yourself!0 -
I'm struggling on what to give up. Normally I do something that is bad for me that will benefit me afterwards. Like no coffee, no soda, cut out desserts, etc. But this year I want it to be about Him. No special "prize" for me. This is an entirely new outlook on lent for me, so I'm not sure what it will be. Maybe I'll give up Facebook, or watching tv, maybe it will be video games. This year I'm going non-food. With the exception of no meat on Fridays.
In a way, I feel like this is my first real lent.0 -
That's exactly how I feel! I was explaining this to someone at church. He was saying I could try proper fasting, but I explained that I might lose weight like that, and in today's society that's actually seen as a success, not a penitence.
I thought of giving up my iPhone, but I just don't think I'd manage that at all :laugh:0 -

Wow. My first thought was "there's mo way!" and them that made me want to do it. But honestly, my iPhone is my only phone. So I can't give it up just in case work calls. But how sad is it that I'm so dependent on this one device? It's my alarm clock, my bank, my radio, my camera, my social network, my fitness aide, my entertainment, oh and my phone.0 -
Before I say goodbye to mfp for Lent, here's a prayer I think you might enjoy. Apparently it's from Glastonbury Abbey.
Give me a good digestion, Lord,
And something to digest.
Give me a healthy body, Lord,
With sense to keep it at it's best.
Give me a healthy mind, O Lord,
To keep the good and pure in sight,
Which seeing wrong is not appalled
But finds a way to put it right.
Give me a mind that is not bored,
That does not whimper, whine or sigh.
Don't let me worry overmuch
About that fussy thing called 'I'.
Give me a sense of humour, Lord,
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some happiness from life
And pass it on to other folk.0 -
Here's a link to a website I discovered today. Hope this helps you on your journey through the Lent season. Be blessed and strengthened during this time.
