hurt myself running

I really pushed myself yesterday and ran 5 miles nonstop in 54 min. I've been running 3-3.5 miles routinely to train for a 5K, but never ran 5 miles before. It felt great and no problems whatsoever. I made it back home and about a couple of hours later I noticed my right foot kind of hurt. As the evening wore on, every time I walked I limped. It's the top of my right foot on the right side and it only hurts when I bear weight on it. I thought it might be better after sleeping last night, but it hurt all day today and I had to work 12 hours today (I'm a nurse). So I limped around all day and had all my patients looking at me funny!
I'm not sure what is going on with it, I just hope it feels better fast. I'm really bummed because I know even if it feels okay in the morning that I shouldn't run on it tomorrow. I think I'll do laps in the pool and hopefully that won't hurt it too much. I was really looking forward to trying to run 5 miles again and now I'm just hoping I haven't injured myself too bad where I'll be out of running for a long time!
Any thought or similar experiences?

You need to rest your foot. A couple years ago when i was training for a half marathon i trained really hard and my shins and legs started hurting but i kept running and didnt give time for muscles to rest. My leg ended up hurting so bad i had to see a doctor and had a stress fracture in my leg and had to wear a boot for 8 weeks and wasnt able to run the half.
So make sure and give you muscles time to heal and work the distance slowly. If you have been doing 3-3.5 miles that is great. But slowly add more miles.
Good luck! Keep working hard0 -
Ouch. Whatever you do...don't run on an injury because it wont get better and you will likely hurt it more and in the end lose more running time. I would see a doc right away. I can't say what you did, but it sounds exactly like a stress fracture i got last year -exactly the same place and I had to stop running for six MONTHS. It took that long to heal and I wore a boot for about 2-3 weeks at the start. So tend and mend.0

I don't know what exactly is wrong, but all I know is DONT run on it until u feel 100%! I hurt my ankle last year randomly while running, and stupidly decided to continue through the pain for the next few days. Big no-no...couldn't run for a good while afterwards bc of my impatience and it turned into a big sprain. Just allow to heal first. Your foot will thank you!0

I've found that when you start running a somewhat considerable distance, it feels a lot better (for me, at least) to give the body rest to avoid injury. I try to do a (once again, for me) long run once a week (5-7 miles), a few moderate runs (3-4 miles), and lift or do some sort of circuit training on my "off" days. I find that running longer distances on back to back days just leads to minor injuries. Hope the foot improves ASAP! And stay off that foot until you're 100% or it could be bad0

I was having some similar issues with my feet and some of my friends on here recommended I go to a running store for a walking /running analysis. They watched me walk on a treadmill and watched how my feet hit the ground, how my ankles rotated, and my arches. I told them about me foot pain and my knee issues from surgery. They helped me find a shoe with the proper support. They cost me more than I would have liked to spend but they really have helped me out. My feet feel sooooo much better and my workouts have improved. Rest is a given but when you get back at it might want to look at your shoes?0

If you are trying to run a 5K you are already there. It's only 3.1 miles. But stay off the foot for a few weeks. Never try to push an injury you will only make it worse. Congrats on the 5 mile run though.0

Way too much too fast.
I'm sorry about your injury. I've dealt with almost every running injury in the book. Have you heard of the 10% rule. you are only supposed to increase your mileage by 10% each week or so. Your cardiovascular system gains fitness a lot faster that your bones and tendons. (you probably know that being a nurse) It can take a long time for your tendons to strengthen themselves to the point where they can keep up with your heart and lungs. It sucks because you are capable of pushing further, but then you get an injury. You should definetly rest but you don't have to stop completely. If it feels better, go to a mile or two but stop in you feel pain. Just do a couple of miles for about two weeks before increasing back to three. And make sure you follow the 10% rule from now on.
Lots of ice, and massage should help speed the recovery process.0 -
I recently put in a long run, only to have my foot hurt afterward. I thought it was a bruise, so I ran on it 3 more times that week. Wrong. Stress fracture. Now I'm on the disabled list for 6-8 weeks while it heals.
It might be a good idea to see a podiatrist.

Thanks everyone! The foot is the same today. I went swimming today, but I'm staying off of it for the next two days till I go back to work. I figure by Monday if it's better then great, but if not I may make an appt with my podiatrist. I haven't seen him since I lost all my weight and I'm interested to see how my foot scans may have changed since then. I saw him a couple of years ago for my plantar facitiis and got orthotics made. I just hope it's not a stress fracture! I really want to run the Susan G Komen 5K in April!0
