Im doing the couch to 5K right now and just wondering what your average is on the speed and how long it takes you to complete a 5K.

It's really going to vary a lot by person and training, but I tend to hover around a 9:30/10:00min mile. I am 37 and only get to run 1-2 times a week max

I'm currently running a 5K at at 10.50 pace. That's pretty damn good IMO, especially considering I just finished the C25K program seven weeks ago and have moved on to the Bridge to 10K. My 10K time is 1:05 - 1:10 on average.

I run my 5K's in about 23 min, working on getting them back down to 21.5 min, with a goal to break 20 min. I run at about 8 mph speed, which is a 7.5 min/mile.

I did my first one in 2007 and finished in 35:32. Ever since I've gradually gotten faster - 27:47 in November. Hoping for a 25:xx for the one I do every year in April. So that's going from 5.3mph (start) to 6.7mph (fastest).

What's funny is, I'm training for distance runs, and on one of my 3mi runs, I finished in 24:30! Meaning If it was a 5k course I'd have come in ~25.

Anyway - good luck with your first! Don't put pressure on time... just stay confident and within your limits. Finish strong

Well I'm a shorty, so I can comfortably run at 4.3 mph for 25 minutes, but I haven't finished a 5K distance. I've been doing walk/run intervals at 4.0 walk and 6.0 run and that got me a time of 37 minutes, 25 seconds. I'm hoping I'll be able to run more of it as I train in the next 2 months. My 5K is May 1st in Washington DC.

You can go here and check out other results. I used to look at other peoples results before I did my first 5k. My first 5k was 38 minutes I think.

Just work on being able to complete it at any speed, and you can work on improving your time later. From what I've seen, I'd say that a good goal to shoot for your first 5k would be around 30:00, which would put you at about 6mph.

I think it depends on what you are comfortable with. I did the c25k program & completed it last October & ran the 5k in a 35 minutes. My first mile was 10 minutes but I slowed down after that b/c of some hills but still beat my estimate of 36 minutes (12 minute miles). I am currently working on increasing my speed on the treadmill and have been running more with 10 minute miles and spurts of 8:38 miles.

I'm running 25 minutes comfortably at between 4.3 and 5.0. I also haven't reached the 5k distance yet with my C25K program. I should probably step up my speed, but last nights run almost killed me at those speeds. I made it just over 4K in 10 minutes of walking and 25 minutes of running.
  • I'm super short so I'm never going to be the fastest runner out there, but the fastest I've ever ran a 5k was in 33 min.
  • I'm on the slower side of things. My first 5K right after doing C25K I took 36 minutes, so 11:45 pace. I'm doing one next month and have gotten a little faster, but still only around 11min/mile.

Some people are fast, some are slow, but it really won't matter at the race. It will be exciting just to be there and finish.

    Enjoy the race!

I started the couch to 5k thing back in November and I'm running a 15 minute mile. My struggle is with my breathing, which I'm trying to control. I'm not consistent with running either, so by the time I start up again, I'm back at square one. I have been doing weight training as well for endurance. Good luck!

I have my first 5K in less than 2 weeks! (March 19)

I've been practicing and the first practice run was about 34 min, the second was 29 something, and the most recent one was 33 (I added more hills on this one to prepare for the real 5k).

I don't really know what I should set as my goal for the 5K. If there's a bunch of hills (I expect there will be) under 35 will make me happy. If it's mostly flat, then under 30 would be great. But either way I'll give it my best and then I'll have something to work with for my next one.

Wow to everyone. I did couch-to-5k last year and my best time was (wait for it) 56 minutes. I was the last runner to finish, and many walkers beat me, too. My mom beat me! So if you ask me, you're doing just fine! Best of luck!

    Good thinking.

Some people are naturally faster runners than others.

My goal going into a race is to always finish upright and smiling. Beating a previous time is always the cherry on top. There is more to running than for time.

    8.5 mph, 7 min mile would be 21min 50 sec. a 20min 5K would be a 6.4 min mile, which is a speed of 9.4 mph.

I won't run any 5K's until probably June to officially know my time, because I am training for a marathon. But last week during a training run, I glanced at my time at the 5K mark & it was 20:12. I'm sure I could go well under that for an actual race.
I have never been that good at 5K's. I was always a fast sprinter, but my distance times were never that great. But with all the extra running for the marathon, my "distance speeds" have come down dramatically.

10min mile here, so 30mins for a 5k for me.

In the last year or so I started interval training, went to jogging, and am now getting up to a runner's slow speed. I timed my own 5k for the first time this past weekend with a time of 28:32.

I know some of my friends seemed impressed, but I don't know if they were just being nice. I don't think it's an incredible time or anything for someone that runs as much as I do, but I am happy with it for right now.

I am working hard lately to improve my 5k time. My current best time is 29:48. I am doing a race this Saturday and hoping my training will pay off with another personal record! Good luck to all you runners!

Oh and I want to add also that the very reason I'm here at MFP us to drop some weight in hopes that I can in turn get a better time for my 5k races.

Dude - 20:12 is HAULING @ss. I would definitely NOT say that you've never been good at 5k's... because that is incredible. Oh... and good (continued) luck on your marathon training.

My 11 yo and I are running his first 5K this weekend. I'm hoping to finish in 29 minutes, which is a 9:45 pace, I did it in a test run on Tuesday, darn kid stopped and waited for me and STILL finished 3/4 mile ahead of me :) I'm currently running a 10K at 10:00 MPM. I'm hoping to finish a little faster than my training run. But... the weather is supposed to be 20mph winds and rain - YUCK.

I hate 5K's, I feel like I'm racing the entire time, I'd much rather do 10K's as I get faster on the back 1/2 of the race. I've not figured out how to conserve but not too much. I'm of the finish strong approach.

My time was 11:17 MPM - Pre P90X, and I had knee pain. I'm amazed how it's really helped my speed. I'm old too, so that I justify as why I'm slower :)
