Military?!

Hey, I was just wondering if there were other service members here on MFP? Preferably women, but the boys are welcome, too. :) I'm an AEGIS Fire Controlman in the Navy, I'm kind of curious how many other female service members are on here-or am I the only one?!? :-O

Brent, I read your profile-it is crazy how quickly and easily you can put on weight after boot camp. I gained 20 pounds in just over a year from leaving MEPS, it was NUTS. Finally have *most* of that weight off, but now I'm on a roll. Joined MFP so I could find some motivation for these last 10 pounds.

Modifyinglife: That is SO awesome, I wish I would have joined when I was your age. I waited till I was 23 to enlist. Get in great shape now and you will be running circles around those other girls in boot camp!

haha well I'm more of a Semper Fortis girl than a Semper Fi ;) It is SO awesome to see Mom's supporting their kids. I'm not going on deployment until next year and my mom is already freaking out! lol

And yeah retired is good enough-it means you actually toughed it out for 20+ years! Kudos! What branch did you retire from?

Retired Air Force. Combat search and rescue aircrew (navigator) on HC-130P aircraft. Lots of time spent in a tent in the desert. But lots of fun places, too. Six years out and I miss it more than I thought I would. You take it for granted until you get out and see how it is in the real world. Free medical, commissary privileges, legal assistance, the sense of family and comraderie - all great benefits. Good luck in your career!

Thanks! I've been doing a lot of cardio and I just started the c25k program. I don't want to get there and feel "oh God what the hell did I get myself into" lol

hahah well you would be surprised how many people have the mind set of "oh i'll just get in shape in boot camp." it is hard enough getting adjusted to being in boot camp without sending your body into total shock. better to do it on your own and ease into it and you will do just fine. :) If you have ANY questions about the Navy or Navy Basic Training, feel free to ask me. I've only been in for 2 years so I'm still pretty fresh out of boot! Do you know which rate (job) you want yet?

Trav, I do networking also (but for AEGIS on ships.) I always joke about how the Navy turned me into a nerd. :)

That is the mind set I took. Imagine my suprise when I found out that laying around doing nothing for 6 or 7 months and gaining 20 pounds was not the way to prepare for Army basic training, lol. So yes, the best thing to do is to at least be in decent shape and be able to pass the pt test before you ever get to basic.

Oh nice, what ship in Japan? I have a friend who is about to go to the Lassen (?)

p_funk, yeah I agree. Just being able to pass the PRT will put anyone a cut above the rest in boot camp. I was 23 when I enlisted and it surprised me how many kids went there fresh out of high school and couldn't run a mile to save their life. Sucked for them but it made me feel pretttttty good about msyelf. ;)
