Spinning Class

I am trying to build up the courage to try a spinning class at my gym. I don't know why, but spinning seems like it would be very hard and I am afraid I will have to quit before the end of the class. Anyone tried spinning? What did you think, is it as bad as I a afraid it is or am I making this bigger than it needs to be?

Spin class is obly what you make of it!! Start out slow and then work your way up. Use less resistance and speed for the first class or so! After a few classes start challenging yourself! good luck!0

I have not YET tried Spinning but I am in the same boat! There is one at the gym I go too and I've been tryingt o come out of my comfort zone. I mostly swim when I am at the gym and was thinking of trying spinning. I threw some "bait" out to my friends on Facebook yesterday and all of them who have done it said that swimming is much harder than spinning and that you can really go at your own pace and not worry about it. They consistently encouraged me to "go for it" that it was fun and I wouldn't regret it. Now I need to see if I can find one there on the weekends, because I can't commit to it during lunch. Hope that helps nudge you a little.0

Do it... I was the same way.. I didn't have enough courage, but I would envy those that did when I passed the class to the locker room.. then my hubby has a nice chat with the instructor after our Aqua Aerobics Workout (she teaches Spinning right before) and asked her about it, because he knew how I wanted to do it but wouldn't... and she said "it's at your own pace, not to worry"
So I mustered up enough courage on a Sunday morning at 8:15am.. and went, AND LOVED IT!!! .. and she was right it was at my own pace... I did what I could, and if I couldn't it was not a big deal... everyone was doing their own pace.. some where consistent with the instructor and some wher enot....
I was afraid of being the fat girl there... and even though I might have been.. there where not a lot of skinny way to fit people there.. everyone was just normal!0 -
It is bad. But...
I had exactly the same fears you had, even though I'm an active cyclist. My main fear was that I wouldn't be able to stand as required by the instructor. So, I just used the bikes when there were no classes to build up a bit of endurance, after a few weeks I was good to go.
And don't feel like you need to 'compete' with anyone in the class, spinning classes often attract hard core folks, so don't be intimidated. Just get in there and do your thing. It is an amazing workout if you have a good instructor, and good music!0 -
Go early so the instructor can show you how to set up the bike. You go at your own pace using the instructor as a guide. Everybody else is concerned about their own workouts 'cause it's hard, so most likely they won't notice if you're not keeping up. If you get tired lower the resistance. Your rear will hurt the next day from the seat.0

Not all spin classes are the same. I much prefer Les Mills RPM classes to generic spin. In RPM they don't do mindless ineffective nonsense like press ups ion handlebars etc which literally do nothing for anyone.
Some spin classes can be good if the instructor has made an effort with their choreography.
RPM is always good, the choreography is professional and the instructors have to do ongoing updates regarding their training and submit videos to be allowed to instruct in the first place.
In terms of how "bad" a class is depends how much you put into it.
I see many people using next to zero resistance and bouncing around on their saddle as their is no pressure on the pedals at all, which kind of defeats the object.
If it's your first class, tell the instructor and get him or her to help you to set up you bike appropriately in terms of saddle height and saddle distance from handlebars. I see so many bikes set up totally wrong for people's height etc and the wrong set up can have a huge impact on comfort.
