The mat on my tread mill has become very slippery. Any ideas on how to improve the traction on it? I am not sure what caused this. I have not spilled or sprayed anything near it. the mat has been tightened. Any suggestions?

How old is it? It may be losing traction on it and may need to be replaced

I am having the same issue. I tighten it and it works well for a few minutes and then starts slipping again.

Is it slipping on the rollers or is the mat surface 'slippery'?

Mat surface is slippery. I even purchased a new pair of sneakers thinking that my old pair may have been too worn down but it was no better.

rough it up with some steel wool. that's probably what I would do. This is inevitable for some treadmills. Depends on the type of track they use and the depth of the grooves.

Disclaimer: I don't know nothing!! There remember I said that...

This may be a "Harry Home-owner" solution and I don't know if it will work but:

If it were me (and I was resigned to the fact that I might need to get a new tread installed anyway):

Take a wire brush and scuff the rubber mat surface
    and/or
Take a heavy grit sand paper (40 to 60 grit) and rough up the surface.

Don't forget to vaccuum up any rubber bits that you make before running the treadmill.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am going to attempt to rough the mat up a little to see if that provides some traction. It's an awful feeling to have your feet slipping while your trying walk let alone run.

I lightly sanded it with a heavy grit sand paper then cleaned it with soap and water. It improved the traction. I am going to try and lightly sand it with a wire brush tomorrow. Thanks for your suggestions I think it may solve the problem.
