    Once again, grapefruit = nasty

And I knew someone would post that whole craving thing, and I also knew it would be posted by someone that doesn't actually use equal. I do not crave sweets, sure i have my favorite foods, but who doesnt? and I also think it it natural for people to want some sweet/ salty things once in awhile. Sometimes I crave crab legs.. I don't blame the fact that I want some crab legs on the fact that I ate an egg that day, it just doesn't make sense.

The scariest thing about aspartame is how it came to get approved byt the FDA.

Donald Rumsfeld was the CEO of the company that wanted to manufacture aspartame and get it approved by the FDA but they wouldn't declare it safe.

So when the next President got elected Rumsfeld, joined the government, they appointed a new FDA chairman, and got aspartame approved. Then he was able to profit like crazy on his product.

Its sickening to see business use politcs to circumvent proper procedure just to make money, at the expense of health/safety/environment. It's so dirty. Maybe it isn`t all that bad for you (although studies seem to support it is bad for you), but just the way it got approved raises some strong doubts.

Well, this has been a very interesting discussion. For anybody that's interested, here's a link to a brief history of the controversy surrounding aspartame. If your mind is already made up, it probably won't make you change your mind about it, but I found it to be an interesting read. Enjoy!

Personally, I think society is conditioned to crave sweet things (by all the sweeteners added to processed foods) and this masks the natural flavors of real food and thus, contributes to obesity. Real food tastes good! There is no need to make everything sweet.

Sugar contributes to obesity. Equal= 0 calorie

You're right, not everything needs to be sweet, for example: salty things.

Real food: Grapefruit......really nasty without Equal
lol call me crazy but i love grapefruit just by itself!

Also, if all the aspartame was removed from the world, we would have world peace.

Another total fact: sugar is not processed at all, ever.

Aspartame is extremely poisonous, and here is why. One of the toxic ingredients of Aspartame is wood alcohol. When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in the Aspartame is converted to formaldehyde, and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis.

Formaldehyde is grouped in the same class of poisons as Cyanide and Arsenic - which are very deadly toxins. The only difference is... Formaldehyde kills quietly, and it takes a little longer. And, in the process of killing people, it causes all kinds of neurological problems.

I have heard this elsewhere, and repeatedly. I don't know for sure, but I know my grandma got breast cancer, and no one else in our family has before or since, and she drank diet soda like it was going out of style. I also don't completely avoid it myself, so I am not saying, OMG its gonna kill us all. But I wanted to throw out that it has been mentioned to me by various people in different settings (and the people would have different sources as well) that aspartame was only allowed by the FDA because of some deep pockets, not because of its safeness for human consumption. It wouldn't be the first item to be so allowed, and I am sure it won't be the last.

some of the replys on this thread make my blood boil. Corruption of science is all I can think of. Some of the "pseudo-science" posted on here leaves an awful taste in my mouth.

I'll say is this, just because someone posted it on the internet, doesn't make it true!

And then I'll remind people of the following facts.

Almost any nutrient is toxic at high levels. Want to know what else is toxic at high levels? Here's a list.

    -Water
    -Protein
    -Copper
    -Iron
    -Vitamin C
    -Sunlight
    -Zinc

need I go on? Almost ANYTHING can be shown to be harmful if you really want to show it. Heck taking a shower can be bad if you do it long enough.

Well I was just at a seminar about disease prevention by a local doctor who said Aspartame is not food and our body cannot metabolize it properly. He said in the Netherlands it is not allowed.

Here is a link to his credentials:
Adrian J. den Boer, DC, ND
Educated in both the Netherlands and the United States, Dr. Adrian den Boer is a board-certified and licensed Naturopathic and Chiropractic physician. In addition, Dr. den Boer is fully certified as a functional medicine doctor. His unique international background allows him to provide his patients with care incorporating both old and proven natural approaches and the latest in cutting-edge natural health care.

With more than 18 years of experience treating a variety of both common and life-threatening conditions, Dr. den Boer is dedicated to offering the very best in natural treatment methods - all with a personal touch. His vast knowledge and caring, hands-on approach provides his patients with many options that lead to improved health. His patients often come from long distances and complain of a wide variety of ailments, such as athletic injuries, difficult to treat chronic and acute conditions such as cancer, inflammatory diseases, acute immune diseases, and destructive neuro-musculoskeletal disorders. Ages range from the very young to the very elderly.

Dr. den Boer is the "research engine" behind DBC. He regularly attends seminars and lectures in the United States as well as internationally in order to continue incorporating the latest research from both Europe and North America. Dr. den Boer utilizes his worldwide resources when preparing research for the practice and adjusting nutrient formulas and recommendations.

He and his wife have five children and currently reside in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area.

Dr. den Boer is available for e-mail correspondence at doc@drdenboer.com

I gave up Diet Coke years ago and have no intention of intenionally putting that poison in my body. I avoid all artificial sweetners and prefer to put real food with nutritive value in my body. I will believe this doctor over just about any other "research" or major media article since the major media is controlled by large corporations who make a lot of money off selling this stuff - they don't necessarily care about my health, but I know this doctor does!

    DC ND. Enough said.

Aspartame is a di-peptide (the building blocks of proteins) it is largely metabolized into its constituen amino acids. To say it isn't a food and that we can't metabolize it is patently false. Should you consume alot of it? Probably not. But it is not some major toxic substance.

Get over yourself hippies, it's time to evolve.

The less chemicals I ingest, the better I am and the better I feel. Yay for hippies!

You don't have to justify it to me homegirl!

The key phrase you used is "once in a while".

I know people who drink probably 5 cans of diet soda a day. I think that's a bit much.

I actually live in rural area that's not very polluted.....so.....I'm probably better off breathing than most.

I also live on a hippie commune :)

Im not tryin to hate. I just don't like it much when people push their beliefs on anyone....that doesn't just have to do with food. I'm totally open minded and until someone says the "cause of death" is due to using equal on their cereal, I'm not buying it. People die from all sorts of things and I'm kinda sick of people freaking out about every little tiny thing.
