Do you have to take a rest day?

I do Jillian Michael Yoga Melt Down, Body Works AM/PM Yoga for Beginners and just started the Brazil Butt Lift. I also plan on dusting off my Pilates Reformer and using it a few times a week. The chart for the Brazil Butt Lift program has 2 rest days, ok so I won't do those exercises. However do I have to take a complete day off or can I do something else? I do not want to rest I am enjoying the workouts. :ohwell:

I've only heard of your muscles needing a rest after weight/strength training. I know some of these include weights but you can but regular cardio on those "rest" days.

Workout according to your comfort level. The general consensus, however, is that the body needs at least one rest day a week to recuperate from the punishment of all that exercise....maybe you could make one day a week a light workout day.

I work out hard 4 days a week and the other 3 days I take it easy, and do the 30 day shred.
  • I do both weights and cardio six days a week so yes, I do rest one day....every Wednesday.

I only take days off If I really need to recover but I always have 1 day a week planned for rest. Once the day comes, I may change my mind. For example I'm doing P90X right now and day 7 is rest or recovery workout. I'll either rest if I really need it or do another type workout. Today was my rest day but I was at the gym at 5 and ran 3 mile intervals.

The body does need rest though so don't over due it and get plenty of sleep ( I know its hard with kids and busy life but thats what they say)
  • I do yoga on my "rest days". I'll take a day off only when my schedule doesn't permit exercise.

Jillian Michaels' program has Four days of circuit training (like the 30DS) - only she's doing 5 circuits instead of 3; one day pure cardio; and two rest days - staggered out. She says it's important to let your body recoup after all the tough work you put it through. I think it depends on the intensity level.

A rest day for me means I can take a long relaxing walk or bike ride if the weather permits. I'm still burning calories and getting exercise but I'm taking time out to enjoy the day, be peaceful and meditate.

It's best to give your body a day off. Whether you're lifting weights or just doing cardio (you should be doing both) your body needs a break. Exercise is good for your body, but it's also a little stressful. Pushing yourself too much physically and mentally can lead you to burn out, but it can also bring on a "starvation mode" kind of response if your body thinks it's working too hard.

You have to make this a lifestyle change, not just a way to quick weight loss. Are you going to work out every single day for the rest of your life? Make your habits now what they will be once you've met your weight loss goal.

i take a rest day between strength training days, and usually 1-2 days from heavy cardio, simply because i have other commitments!

My suggestion is do what works for you. I would also add that since you aren't doing extended cardio or weight training it's okay to not rest. I really don't have a rest day because my rest day I walk a minimum of 2 miles. I may do more on my "day off" but at least I walk.

So listen to your body and do what works for you. If your body starts hurting too bad then it's telling you it needs rest or you'll hurt yourself.
