Ankle injury?

Hi all

I feel like a bit of a foolio because I've apparently done something to my right ankle with NO idea how I did it, and was wondering if anybody had ever experienced this before?

It started out a bit sensitive to touch a few nights back, and then the next morning it was quite swollen around the ankle bone. It's been quite painful when there's pressure on it (ie, the back of a shoe, and even a tension bandage) and it's still a bit swollen. The pain is localized around the ankle bone and up the back of the foot into the lower calf.

I can still weight-bear and walk pretty alright still. I'm just annoyed because I don't want to aggravate it with exercise, but most of my fave cardio requires pretty solid ankles and I don't know what I can be doing instead.

Any thoughts or a completely unofficial and off-the-record diagnosis?

I think I might have to!
I enjoy swimming socially, lol, not so much as a fitness activity because I tend to get bored, but I'll have to do what I can!
    Thanks for the suggestion :)

Its quite possible you has either strained or sprained your ankle. If it is really puffy and swollen a sprain is more likely, if it has more of a lingering sore-ness then its more likely just strained. Most initial sprains will hurt and be quite sensitive, so it may be a minor sprain if you can still walk on it. I sprained my right ankle on a trampoline when I was quite young and it has never been the same, a year or so ago I broke it just running (silly yes, but very painful). The most common way you injure your ankle is by rolling it to the outside so the bottom of your foot faces inside; your leg will immediately correct it but it will hurt for a couple of weeks. It can also be done just by landing on your ankle slightly off balance. There are tight bands wrapped around your ankle to keep this from happening, if they get loosened the only thing you can do is let them heal and be careful on it, if you stretch them out too much they will never return and I promise that sucks beyond most anything, I've found that ankles are extremely important. It is worth it to not use it and let it heal for a couple weeks. When you do work out consider wearing an ankle brace. Loosing a couple weeks of work out is better than years and years of pain and an unstable ankle.
I don't mean to be all doom and gloom but if it is a sprain I would not work it for a couple weeks, do ab work or upper body work-outs.
I really hope this helps and your ankle gets better.

    Thanks Laury for the advice!
I'm just super frustrated because I can't pinpoint what I've done to it, but it must've been something that seemed so minor at the time (maybe a slight roll of the ankle when running Tuesday night) but that flared up later. Grr.

Swimming it is and upper body it is, I suppose!
