(I posted this last night but I would love to see some more responses) I just had a questions for anyone who cares to answer it. What is the one food(s) you gave up in order to achieve weight loss? Has it helped? I find it hard to give up certain food that I love, but I've learned to eat them in moderation.

Sweets. Cookies, bars, cakes and ice cream. I stopped about 2 months ago and surprisingly I don't miss them.

Well, I married into an Italian family that loves to eat. Things I've had to cut out that are fairly routine around them are:

Breads, Cheeses, Cured Meats & Wine

Those are all tough for me to say no to. I find the best way is to just not be around them. It's helped a ton not just from a caloric standpoint, but also from a sheer focus standpoint.

For me what made the most difference is giving up regular soft drinks. I'm only drink diet once now. I know they're still bad for me so I try not to drink them too much. But I gave up the regular once 100%. Rule #1 for me is not to drink calories and it's working.

Wine - because of the empty calories and because a big part of our church ministry is working with addicts. I am like you with food, however - I just try to eat everything in moderation. I try to stay away from things that I know I have a hard time stopping... Oreos, chips.

I haven't given up anything. I can't imagine telling myself that I couldn't eat chocolate (or whatever) from here on out.

That said, I definately have changed how much and how often I eat many foods. Candy (which I used to indulge in almost daily) I rarely ever eat anymore. Chocolate - I'll have a little bit every day, and now I'm moving into dark chocolate. Alcohol - maybe once a month. Fast food - rarely, if ever, and then I'll get a salad anyway. Bread consumption - WAY down. Cheese consumption - WAY down. Dessert - I can't even remember the last time I had any.

So, it's not really that I've given anything up, but I've just modified my lifestyle. And I don't miss any of it anymore. At first, I did, esp. the bread and candy. But now I don't. And I know I can always have it, if I really want to, like at special occassions.

I have given up things on a certain day but not for life. If I crave a cookie or whatever and I don't have it in my calories to have it I choose to not eat it that day so in essence I am giving up that item but only for that day. . There is not anything that is off limits. I try to live by this Bible verse. "All things are permissable but not all things are beneficial." Some days it is beneficial to have cake (my b-day party, etc...) It is not all about the physical. We have to think about the mental and spiritual aspects too.
