I started mfp 13 days ago and I have lost 17 pounds already. I have changed my weight loss goals to be more realistic, and I am no longer looking to be my high school weight. I have also adjusted my profile and they are recommending an increase of 430 calories to lose 1 pound per week. Are these figures correct? Is it normal to lose 17 pounds in 13 days? Can somebody help me out?

Did you change your eating? Did you just start exercising?

I have heard (and experienced) a quick fast drop at the start that then starts slowing down after a few weeks.

If you are out of shape you can easily lose big numbers early on, so don' worry about that. Much of that weight loss is water that most overweight people retain. It is good for you to have it gone. If you had stayed on the exact same calories, you would have seen your weight loss slow down because those things like extra water would no longer play into the loss numbers. I lost 10 pounds in a matter of days when I started all this, and that would have been all water weight. My doctor was not concerned at all, but was quite happy that water was out of me. Keep it up.

Yes, I changed my eating when I joined mfp on 02/27/11 and started counting calories.

Thank you for the advice. I now understand that it is normal and it is accumulated water weight.

@ rjcode6, that is what it is then. You went from consuming to much to consuming the proper amount of food. You are doing great. Keep it up. Some of those pounds lost so far was probably water weight as well. Good luck and you are off to a great start.
