i don't know the con's because i've really never explored or researched but my kickboxing instructor has us "shake it" for about 5 minutes to build strength in our arms. instead of spending 20.00 on a shake weight we use our own 5 pound weights and shake the weight ourselves in a rotation to music that works for us... if you choose to go with the shake weight you may want to look into this as a cheaper option?

I have a shake weight and have lost about 1.5 inches from my upper arms. However, I am also doing Zumba, so I am not sure if it is the Shake weight, Zumba or a combination of the 2. It is not as easy as it looks in the commercials.
