What prompted you to lose weight?

I was asked this the other day and thought it would be interesting to find out everyones reasons for deciding the time was right to lose weight.
For me, it was an instant decision one evening as I was drying myself after a shower. I happened to glance in the mirror and I was truely disgusted with myself for looking the way I did. I walked closer to the mirror and I wobbled... when I stopped I continued to wobble! I felt sick :sick:
I nearly cried at that point when I realised how I looked! I hunted out some old photos of me, back when I was slim, fit and happy! I realised I wasn't happy any more and I felt absolutely rotten!
The decision had been made, I was going to lose weight.... it wasn't going to be one of my usual diets (you know the ones that last a week and then give up), I finally had the motivation and determination to do something about my weight!
So, what prompted you?

Hubby bought a scale that went high enough to read my weight. Our old scale did not and would give you 3 different weights if you stepped on it 3 times. I had an idea of what I weighed but in reality weighed 15lbs more than I thought which was already 30lbs higher than I had been just 6 months before.
I knew I had to fix it so the next day I started. That was October 18th. Found MFP on a friend's suggestion in November.0 -
I was nearly literally bursting out of my trousers, the zip kept going down on its own!
And fat photos, you know, being thankful for digital cameras so you can delete the fat photos. Only to delete them ALL and have 50 family holiday photos without one single photo of myself. The excuse for no photos of myself was that "I was doing all the photographing". Yeah right.0 -
Mine was vacation...
I went on a cruise with my family last June and as I sat on the Lido deck I had a good look around. I was AMAZED by the number of people that (a) couldn't fit comfortably in the chairs (b) were just eating platefuls of food (c) the general unhealthiness of the majority of the passengers. I decided I did not want to be "one of them".
I had not gotten totally out of control yet but was well on my way. From the 2nd day of the cruise I went to the ship's gym everyday, chose the steps instead of the elevators and tried to make healthier and more modest food choices. Oh, and I still had a GREAT time on the cruise...my sister (who was doing weight watchers at the time) was thrilled about my revelation and went to the gym with me and helped my decide what to eat.
Once back from vacation I continued what I started on vacation.
Although I had a plateau from Dec-Feb, I'm back on track now and have lost 41 pounds since that cruise.0 -
My preschool aged daughter came home from school crying and said one of her friends told her she had a fat mom. I vowed to myself a long time ago my kids would never be the ones with the 'fat mom.' And I was a mess when she told me that someone said that's exactly what I was.
Plus, I went in Macy's in our local mall and was told by the woman there that "We don't sell clothes THAT big. You should just go shop at Walmart." I want to be able to go shopping in ANY store I choose (which will NEVER be Macy's.)0 -
Wow, this list could be so long, but I would have to say:
1) I have a 5 year old son and I want to be around for him as long as possible
2) I see the health struggles my father is going through and I DO NOT want to go through that as I get older
3) Clothes: who doesn't want to look and feel good in clothes
4) The beach: every year we take a beach vacation in Florida and I hate the photos afterwards.....
5) I work on an offshore platform facility and I do a lot of stairs everyday. I want to be able to go up and down those stairs and not be winded when I get to the top
6) Be a good example for my family0 -
Like the OP, I randomly decided one day that I wanted to get in shape. I had looked at myself in the mirror and didn't like it very much. While I'm not overweight according to my BMI range, I was at the very top of my range. I want to get rid of the extra flab around my mid-section so I don't have to constantly suck it in.0

My story is pretty much the same. I saw myself as overweight and according to the BMI that is what I was considered (barely but I was there). I am 5'4" and I was 160 at my heaviest. Now I know that is not "fat" but to me, and on me, it was.
I just finally got tired of my clothes getting tight that I realized I needed to change.
I would also just have very little energy, plus just everything about myself seemed slow. Then a friend of ours (who is only 31, 2 weeks younger then me) had a heart attack. That shocked my butt into fear mode. I realized that I want to be around for my kids. I want to be healthy. I don't want my husband to have to love me when I am not at my best.
I also found Zumba and kicked soda (which was hard but now I don't even want one). I have lost 12 pounds since the beginning of January. I still have about 17 more to go but I feel so much better. I am able to buy size medium shirts...shopping is fun now!0 -
My husband being in the hospital for the 2nd time with pancreatitis. We tried to eat healthy after the 1st time he was in the hospital but I got pregnant and thought being on diet would harm the baby so I got off that diet. I really should have not done that because it was not really a diet, but eating healthy. After the 2nd time (6 years later and another kid later), i knew some changes had to be made if i wanted my family to have healthy eating habits. I'm glad to have found MFP because I learned so much especially with eating healthy, it was ok to eat foods you enjoy once in a while with portion control.0

my size 24 jeans getting tight. that was it!
I also left a very stressful work environment that I had used as an excuse for a long time to just not care about myself.
so now, no excuse and a big ol' pair of jeans staring at me in the mirror. LOL0 -

I have struggled my whole life with weight. My mother didn't mean it but when something happened she would say here is a cookie or piece of pie etc you will feel better. Well with the ups and downs of everyday life I eat the cookie or cake and didn't watch what I ate.
Have grandsons with parents that are very minimal. I am raising most of the time. Mother never comes around them....Dad my son won't work. He was living in my home and I got tired of him not working, my husband allowing him to stay there of course for the boys and I got tired of it and separated last year in August. I got my own place and the boys on the weekends.
I kept haing to get bigger clothes
I couldn't play in the snow really well with my grandsons
diabetic- causing problems with health and didn't want to go down the road of unhealthy diabetics
Want to see my grandsons grow up
II guess it was never really important before, I mean I knew I needed to but it really wasn't that important until my grandsons came along. they are 8 and 7 years old and need a grandmothers love and support until they can make it on their own.
I quit smoking years ago, quit drinking years ago, now it is time to quit eating, but it is sooooooooo hard. I am in doctoral program and I crave that comfort food..............0 -
april of last year I was diagnosed with melanoma in my eye and had to have my eye removed. Because I had had a tumor in my eye for over a year, they were really afraid of it spreading (the first place it spreads to is your liver) and i had to have a ton of tests run. The bloodwork showed that my liver was slightly damaged, but the worst part was that they couldnt really tell if it was damaged because of the cancer, or because my weight was way over what it should be and fat had started forming around my liver. I began to lose weight then, but I stopped worrying about it becuase my blood tests (which i had to have every 3 months) showed the damage going down- even though it was still above what it should be.
This year I finally have health insurance again, so at the beginning of the year they started to run blood tests nad have me see different doctors, and I found out that the damage was starting to increase again. At that point I knew I was going to have to do something about my weight- I am only 22 years old, and I do not want to have to have a liver transplant before I'm 30 just because I can't get my weight under control.
One of the worst parts about it was that I am the smallest member of my family, and even all of my close friends. If my liver was showing damage and I was the smallest member of the family, what was happening to them?
Since then, my mother and I (and occasionally my husband and his best friend) have started working out each weekday and making an effort to eat healthier (my sister, who is the largest member of our family at almost 400 lbs, works out from home and continues to eat very poorly). While we sometimes fail miserably, I hope that through my success I can help inspire my family and friends to do so as well, so that we can all be as healthy and happy as we can possibly be

1) I tried on my wetsuit and could barely get it up to my thighs

Have always been overweight for as long as I can remember, but never really done anything about it.
Decided I wanted to change my life completely and looked at joining the Army, went to the careers office, and was told to lose some weight and then they'll talk to me, fair enough I guess, they don't want to waste their time with someone who isn't ready.
That was October time, managed to lose 3 stone so far, another 2 stone and I can walk back in and start my application.0 -
My favorite pair of jeans had finally worn out, but when I went to find new jeans I couldn't find any that fit "right". I carry my weight on my stomach, but have relatively thin hips/legs. Jeans that fit my legs would not fit my stomach-- unless I wanted to sport a horrible muffin top! I ended up having to buy baggy pants just so I could get them to button!
Most of my family struggles with weight, but in a the last few years I have seen many of them find a diet that works for them. My brother has lost a ton of weight over the past few years, probably around 100 lbs! My sister also lost a ton of weight this year, around 80 lbs! I don't have as much as them to lose, but all of a sudden I am the "fat" one in the family, when I used to be the "smallest". I want us all to live a long, healthy life-- so I made the change after I spent the week with my sister, eating all the same foods as her and loving it!
Of course, I also have a brother who can eat anything and always look great, just like my dad...stupid genetics!0 -
Well my daughter turned one on Feb. 1st and I realized that with my son now 2 and her 1, I couldn't fall back on the excuse that I had just had 2 babies anymore. I had no excuse for the way I looked or the fact that I weighed more than ever before (except when pregnant).
I had been wanting to go back to the gym for months and had even attended a friend's zumba class for a week. But I just couldn't do it. It put way too much of a strain on my family to try and be gone in the evenings and there wasn't time for me to drive anywhere in the mornings before my husband had to leave for work.
So I started researching workout videos. And since it seemed like most of my friends were doing P90x, I thought that would be a good place to start. Except I have several physical limitations. So I decided that P90 would be the best place for me to start.
Today is P90 Day 30 and even though my scale has been stuck for a few weeks, I am still proud of myself just on the fact that I have actually stuck with this for 30 days. Oh and at the same time I ordered P90 I discovered MFP. They have both been awesome tools to keep me going.
So I didn't have like this one time epiphany that I was fat and needed to lose weight. I had known it for some time, but my daughter turning one was what made me decide to find a plan I could stick to.0 -
For me, it is the fear of returning to the old me, after losing so much weight earlier in life, I don't want it to return. I want to drop 20-25lbs for me!!!! I look in the mirror now and I am not happy with that I see. I am changing it!!!!!
Starting Zumba again tonight, at least twice a week, then working out at home the rest. Has anyone tried out Insanty Workouts???0 -

I did the first fitness test of Insanity, bloody hard work lol. Sadly I only did that as I couldn't do it every day at home.0 -
I just had my 3rd child 10 months ago. I want to be the best version of myself possible for my children and (in the very distant future) my grandchildren!0

A few things prompted me:
1. I weighed more than I did when I gave birth to my child :frown:
2. All my "fat clothes" we're becoming my too tight clothes
3. I weighed more than my boyfriend
4. I was sick of pulling up my pants and pulling down my shirt everytime I stood up.
5. I hated the way that I looked in every photo.. I used to take pictures all the time and I had begun to avoid them like the plague.
6. My grandmother died at 65 due to complications from diet induced diabetes and my mother was diagnosed with diabetes at 35... Thinking that I could only have 9 good years before diabetes attacked me too because of my lifestyle scared the crap outta me0 -
Seems like I've been trying to slim down forever but this time having to move the "big sliding weight" up to 200 was what did it for me.0

I don't want to go overseas and be overweight.

I've been trying for a few years. In November, I joined a gym, and I'm getting stronger, but now I need to work on getting my nutrition and eating habits right.
I remember telling my best friend many years ago I wouldn't ever be a chronic dieter. I'm one of those. I can't wait to be done.0 -
Well, I've needed to lose weight for years. I'd think about it, but never really stuck to any plan for more than a few weeks. Then a couple of years ago my doctor said that my blood pressure was starting to be a bit on the high side. High BP runs very strongly in my family, and I didn't want to end up in the same spot as my mother only 15 years sooner. Also, and this was a major motivator, my doctor said that I wouldn't be able to take BC if I was on medication for high blood pressure. I do not want to go back to the horror that is my unregulated cycle.0

I haven't liked how i've looked for many years. I'd made a zillion half-assed attempts at losing weight(diet/work out for a week or two), but my laziness always won out. So I kept gaining more weight. It got to the point where I was no longer comfortable in jeans, but even THAT didn't do it for me. It was when I found myself single after a 3 year relationship, completely unhappy and lacking in self-esteem, that I realized now was as good a time as any to really get serious about getting in shape and losing weight. Going to the gym ended up being a GREAT time filler when I was feeling lonely, and i've been able to stick with it now.0

Last year, at age 36, I began having heart palpitations. My doctor referred me to a cardiologist, and he put on my medical chart (and I quote): "cannot rule out obstructive coronary artery disease". At that time, I weighed just under 500 lbs. They ran some tests, including an echocardiogram, and it was ruled out. Still, it was being faced with my own mortality that was the wakeup call I needed. My doctor looked at me and said if I didn't lose this weight, I would die.
That was just over a year ago, and I've lost 112 lbs so far. I hit a major plateau, but am now back on track. Having a bit of trouble readjusting my diet, but I plan to stay on it and keep going. Still have another 200 to lose :-)0 -
Been there..my moment was Jan 3rd..I decided that this would not be just another New Years Resolution that I never resolved and because this was the first yr that I had a child..I decided that being her mother I have to be an example to her..while I was pregnant w/her I developed toxemia/preclampsia..which results from developing high blood pressure..so once I had her I was taken off high blood pressure meds and I felt that this was God's way of giving me another chance so I took advantage...I'm down 18lbs and plan to reach my goal by the end of this year...plus I also have my 10yr reunion coming up so that was another motivator for me...Good Luck to everyone!!!0

Oooh good question! It's one that I keep picturing myself answering once more people notice my weight loss.
Like so many, I've wanted to lose weight forever and have tried many many times before. But I kept putting off re-starting until "Monday". Then, while I was on vacation with my family this past Christmas I went through my son's camera and found pics of me from Thanksgiving. Scary! Frightening in fact. The image is burned in my memory although I haven't looked at it again since.
Then, randomly, I started back at work on January 3rd of this year. While I wasn't seriously thinking of getting back on the wagon, I decided to visit MFP again after several months of being away from this site. And, suddenly, I was logging my food in. I found this "Lose Weight By April" group and thought, "Why not?" and that rest, as they say, is history. I found myself becoming more immersed in losing weight, picked up lovely friends along the way and just really enjoying this site. In mid-February I began exercising about 3 times a week. Then, in late February, my cousin who had always suffered from being morbidly obese, died of complications related to a blood clot. That sealed the deal for me. At that point, I knew I really had no choice since my own health has been compromised because of my weight.
Now I work out for at least 30 mins a day and look forward to logging in and cheering on my friends. This place is inrfectious!0
