Shin pain

I do intervals of walking/running on the treadmill. I average 15 miles a week, three 4 mile days and two 1.5 mile days.

My problem is my shins are killing me. It has become so bad that I can barely stand to do it. I bought new shoes that were specific for running. It's worse.

I do not have the problem if I run outside or with the wii run (in my living room).

sounds like "shin splints"...my mom gets them bad...dont know much about how to alleviate the pain tho sorry...i knew my mom had to do special exercises to strengthen that muscle
  • Rest, use ice packs, stretch and strengthen those muscles, and make sure when you run on the treadmill not to lean on it. Good form should alleviate these problems. Don't know what else to say, though. :(

read the sig :) 2 - 3 times a day, it's good for the shins, they do go away, and the more you run ... the less likely they will be to come back, sometimes its bad form - I suggest doing a 1 run clinic (even 1 on 1 or something) they will show you the best ways to land on your feet and stride etc for a more efficient run
  • I have shin splints and it happens to me if I don't warm up well. I will actually start off on the treadmill at a very slow pace - 1.5-2 mph and do that for about 5 minutes, then go up to 2.5 mph for 5 minutes, then 3 mph for 5 minutes and so on until I get to my desired speed. I've noticed that my shin splints don't hurt if I run, only when I walk. Ice packs and stretching those muscles helps a lot, as well.

To strengthen those muscles.. when you do your warm up walk and your cool down part of your walk, walk on your heels... that will help strengthen those muscles... what is happening is your calf muscles are trying to pull your shin muscles away from the bone, because your calf muscles are stronger than your shin muscles..

strengthen them and that will go away... that is what I had to do.
