Hi al, I have a quick question about the show and a few questions about exercise.

First off, the show. Been watching the show to get myself in the right frame of mind to really change my lifestyle and it is working, I am overcome with how much these people change in such a sort time.

So my question, does anyone know how often they work out, is it every day or something else?

Also I am new to all this and very new to exercise, until 2 weeks ago I hadnt done anything for nearly 20 years!

The problem is I dont have the money to pay for a trainer or join a gym, so I have been muddling through it at home, with a little success, but I am not sure if i am getting the most out of what I am doing or if I am doing to much.

Is there any place where I can get more advice on how to plan my exercise for the week, so that all my body works out and I get to rebuild my muscle ( my arms and legs are very skinny ) and to lose the very large belly nearly 44ins ! ( seems that is where all my weight is ), I cant afford the gym as I said, so the workouts have to be free, low cost with very little equipment, damn this not having any money lark :( Is there anything I should save up for to use at home for best results, I was thinking about saving up for some dumbbells, should I get a set or is there anything better to use my small budget on?

Not only do I need some advice on how to plan my week to best get results, but is there any place to see how to do the exercises correctly, I have borrowed the 30 day shred and been working with that, its very very hard but trying to make the most of it.

My last question is about walking and running, now thats free to do, but my shins really hurt and I have been told I will need the correct shoes to help with this, but how will I know whats the correct shoes, I am a complete newbie to all this!

phew, thanks for any help its going to be a long road, but at least i have started down it!

They work out every day for 4-6 hours a day. So when you see that girl that is the same weight as you lose 5 lbs in a week and you lose 1 thats why.

A fitness magazine might help you like Heath or something. Many libraries carry periodicals like that so you can take notes or spend a few dollars on copies, another option would be to look at the websites of the fitness magazines that you like. Some gyms have cheap trial periods and in that time you can ask some basic questions.
  • Hi There

I'm new to this also and wanted to imporve my fitness in a low cost way. I too got my motivation from watching the biggest looser so I went out and bought the biggest looser wii game.

I am unable to go out and exercise in the evenings due to a lack of child care and as i work all day the evenings are my only chance to exercise.

What I really like about the biggest looser on the wii is that it is not the same exercises every day. You start by taking a fitness test to determine your fitness level, thenafter choosing the frequency you want to exercise it gives you a starting point. It is reviewed weekly giving you recomendations but you are able to change these and the fitness routines are different each day which helps me from getting bored!

Other than this I have started taking my daughter on regular walks and choosing activities at the weekend that keep us both active like ice-skating.

    Good luck on your journey

Both Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper have exercise DVDs for your exercising pleasure! I am currently working the 30 Day Shred and have seen lots of improvement and LESS inches!!!

On a budget? Skip the home-version of the gym equipment. You can do a lot with your own body-weight in exercises. *edited to add, when I looked up the other term* isometrics was another good one.
Feel a need for some weights? FIll a pint/ gallon milk jug with water, bam there's some weights with handles, water can be decreased if that's too much weight at once.
Last year at this time I was knocking down an old rundown fence keeping what wood was still re-usable, that was an excellent workout, I just came in from an hour of chipping the ice build up from the walkway here at the house, more of a workout from that than the gym has given me lately!
If you have stairs, use them, make multiple trips up and down them for something.

I love that show, but realistically none of us will lose that much that consistently. They are training like professional athletes and then some!

I think a shoe fitting would be the first thing I would start with. Go to your local running store and get fitted by a professional. They will cost more, but you won't be sorry. Once you have the right shoes you will be walking and running like never before!

There are a ton of internet videos on "how to exercise" but I don't use them, so I'm not much help there. There are also tv shows and on-demand type stuff to try.

If you think you need some equipment to work out at home, you really don't need much. A simple set of light hand weights (under $10 at Walmart) and the DVD of your choice is great! Or, just walk! And keep walking!!! When you can, start running. If you are moving every day and watching your calories you will lose weight. If you still need to tone those arms, grab some handweights and lift them! Lift them until you're sore and then wait a day and do it again!

    Good luck!

You could consult with your Doc for a work out plan if you're not sure where to begin. There are lots of inexpensive dvd's. You could also check online for work outs, or even just how to do certain moves correctly. The internet is a great source! If you don't have money for weights, use your own body weight, or the water jugs as mentioned, or even canned veggies (or something you have in your cupboard or pantry) making sure you have equal weight in both hands. The library (as mentioned) has magazines, books, even videos/dvd's you can borrow. If your legs/feet start hurting while walking, try slowing it down a little or not walking quite so far at first. If you haven't done anything for so many years, you can't expect to walk/run miles on the first day. If you need to get better shoes, try an athletic shoe store. They should hopefully be able to help you choose a good shoe to prevent shin splints, etc. Good luck! :)

First of all let me say welcome and glad that you have joined MFP! I was in a similar situation to you, I had no clue about what I should be doing or eating and what I thought was good wasn't. I did read a lot on-line regarding eating better and what exercises did what for which part of the body. I wasn't able to join a gym either but I came to the conclusion I didn't need a gym. As you said walking and running are completely free and that's how I started. I did get a new pair of shoes because I thought I should be wearing a decent pair of walking or running shoes. I only work out at home, not sure if you have cable tv or not but our cable company (Comcast) has a good selection of fitness programs that are free. You can rent dvd's at the library as well. Hope some of this helped.

What I would recommend is anything you have at the moment. I started with jumping jacks in my room. Seriously, jumping jacks in my room for under a year - in one spot - I had a permanent mark where I wore it out, LOL. I am not saying that's the only option, but doing jumping jacks and switching my food intake a bit helped me lost 60+ pounds. It's a really really good workout, and you set your own pace and sweat like a hog in the beginning.

Also MFP is great for your eating questions. These forums will help you with recipe alternatives, questions regarding intake and overall racking your calories. Local stores even have "Light" magazines and articles.

Another is maybe cheap weights, I would recommend a set of spinlock handles. You can then purchase what ever type of weight plate you want, if you can afford two x5lbs, buy it! If you can only lift 2.5lb, buy 2! then maybe buy 2 more, and you have an option of 2.5/5 and build your way up. So instead of a fixed weight where if you surpass it in strength, you can crank or decrease the weight. You can do alot with weights:

Bicep Curls, reverse curls, hammer curls
    Tricep Extensions, Tricep Kickbacks
    Shoulder Presses, Flys
    Chest Flys, Presses
    Lunges, Hack Squats,
    Lateral Abdominal Bends
    etc etc etc

Another option (check weight capacity) are pull up bars - there's a variety out there, ones that mount onto your door frame, some screw in, some can multi as a push up station and if it's got enough capacity you can do hanging leg raises, knee ups, etc etc.

Here's a few links to some:
    http://east.ballyfitness.com/rapid_results/expert_advice/product_tip_sheet/Exercises/chinsitbarexerc.asp
    http://www.asseenontvguys.com/iron-gym-pull-up-bar.aspx

You don't even have to be able to do 10x pull/chin ups. Took me months to get passed 5, Lol - but they're great

Also, you can get a stepper - (personally not my favorite, but others live by it!) there's ones where you can increase/decrease height, so you can maximize your growth. Great for cardio and can double as a station for dips, incline pushups, step up lunges, a place for low squats(ground mark) and ... in the olden days when I had no bench for my weights I used it as a bench, Lol.. and threw a spinlock between my legs and did leg exercises.

    Stepper: http://compare.ebay.com/like/280638044027?ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar

Running/walking are great! For me I live in Canada so it can be limiting, but for those in good weather conditions it's an all year round ability.

There's lots of options, just have to get crafty.

I am not a BodyBuilder but I visit this and its forums religiously, http://forum.bodybuilding.com/?welcome=true there's questions and posts from equiptment, to home-made equiptment, exercise swapping, how to preform an exercise etc. Very good place to go.

    Hope anything I said helped.

Keep in mind the biggest loser contestant eat very low calorie diets. 1100 for a guy and 900 for a girl. Even for a skinny person that is pretty much a starvation diet that will damage your body.

I love the biggest loser DVDs. The power walk one is great, in place of the weights you can use filled water bottles, or cans as long as they weigh the same. Also you dont need much room in your living room. it is under $10 at walmart. Bob Harper DVDs are great I am currently doing the inside out strength and boy is it a work out. IF you have a YMCA around sometimes they will trade volunteer work for a membership, as do some gyms.

No comment on the show, but I just finished reading a great book called "You Are Your Own Gym" by Mark Lauren. It is basically the best book I have read on body weight training. Mark used to be one of the trainers for Special Ops forces and body weight work is their primary form of training. You would be well served by reading it as it gives just about every body weight exercise you could imagine, and that strength training will be more useful to you than a bunch of protracted aerobics. The best part is you can do the exercises with virtually no equipment and pretty much anywhere.

    1100 cal???? really???
Is that total? Or NET total? Big difference.

I can tell you now, no-0ne would survive on 1100 total with 4-6 hours of workouts...not a chance.

I'm thinking that is NET calaories. they would surely be eating the exercise calories...? surely?

Remember 1100 NET would still be a massive deficit for these guys. thier maintence cals' would be something crazy like 3500 NET, lol. So 5lbs per week is about right.

Biggest Loser is far from a healthy loss of weight. It is taking severely obese people who many would say cannot lose weight without surgery or something radical like that. Yet things like the "last chance workout" are nothing healthy. Working out just before a weigh in will not make you lose any fat, just dehydrate a person. It will show up as weight loss, but it is not permanent. It will only last until they drink enough water to re-hydrate. All I know says they live on 1100-1200 calories and the fat from their body. In fact, I had never heard of Net Calories in all my reading about dieting until I came here.
  • Thank you all so much for all your replies.

This is why I thank my lucky stars everyday that i came across this site, there is no way I would succeed whyout this site, everytime I need info I come here.

The internet is great, but there is too much info, and just as many different views.

I have simple goals and trying to find a way to reach them.

    The first.

learn to eat healthy, to eat the correct foods at the correct time. This isnt just for me, but also for my family and my young son so he wont fall into the same trap I did.

    second

Lose that weight, I dont want to wait until the doctor tells me I have to because ( insert one of the many illnesses caused by being over weight ) I want to lose weight before I do too much damage to my body.

    3rd

Get fit and active, 3 weeks ago i went on the field with my son to play some soccer with him and after just 5 mins of very light play, I was out of breath sweating like a pig and my sons face told me he was really worried about me and not having fun playing! Thats the moment I saw how selfish I have been and how much my bad habits not only effect me, but the people I love.

So I need to learn the skills to reach these goals and i am sure with the fantastic support and advice everyone here gives I will make it, not just for a while but for the rest of my life.

I cant thank you all enough!

Those are all excellent motivations. You can do it. I sadly waited until my health was very bad effected. Now I have had to work back from that as well as just lose the weight. Thankfully, I have seen a great deal of positive progress in this. You can as well. You don't need fancy equipment, gym memberships and all the rest. Basically with MFP and your own body you can get yourself in great shape. Remember though, it took time to get out of shape and put all the fat on, it will take time to come off as well. Often getting active and fit is easier once some of the weight has come off, but try what you can.

Another place to look for free bodyweight exercise stuff is bodyweightculture.com (hopefully I remembered that correctly) and for a fat burning exercise approach that works much better than long duration steady state aerobics read over at intervaltraining.net I wish I had read the stuff on exercise there and the book I mentioned above when I started my whole weight loss journey. It would have focused my exercise stuff in a much more effective manner than what I started with or did for most of the time.

There was one show a few seasons ago that showed the "after " workout workout..It really made me look at the show with new eyes..They had ice packs on the shins, getting rub downs, one guy even had his elbow in a whirlpool !!! Those workouts are killers..it is a show after all. We didn't get this way overnight, or even in 6 months!!! We need to remember this.
As for low cost workouts...There are tons of sites which can help with free exercises, DVD are really cheap at TJ Maxx, Walking is awesome!!! I do have a Wii and have had huge success with the Wii Active !! There are even challenges on this site which will get you moving..I ran across one yesterday that challenged you to do Jumping Jacks daily...this is massive cardio !!!
Set your goals and then spend a little time looking...We are all here to support each other !! We can change our lifestyle without going broke !!
    Good Luck

I wonder how true this show is as far as the time they say they give these contestants to lose the weight. 20 pounds in a week seems like way too much to lose in that period of time

I find those weight loss show motivating as well, but the biggest loser is kind of horrible to its contestants. Check out his article form a person who was on the show: http://www.bodylovewellness.com/2010/06/09/kai-hibbard-biggest-loser-finalist-part-1-of-3/

Lot`s of good information has been share with you for exercising. That is one part of the battle. Eating right is the other part. Learn how to count the calories in all the food that you consume, and learn to know what everything you eat is made of. Then you will be able to limit you calories to exactly what you need to fuel your body properly while losing weight.

I really like "Heavy" on A&E and "Supersize vs. Superskinny" on BBC (available through YouTube). Because of the money component associated with "Biggest Loser", it seems like there are some unhealthy practices that go on, and that the focus is on loosing as much as possible as fast as possible. The other two shows I mentioned focus more into why people are over weight, and deal with the emotional and psychological issues. They also are focused on the health and well being of the people involved.
