This is probably my most asked for recipe. Well, asked for as in "Karen, will you make a soda bread?" Lol.
Happy St. Patrick's Day.

4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tbs baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/3 cup shortening
1 cup raisins
1 large egg
1 1/3 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 350
Grease a large baking sheet and set aside.

In a large bowl, sift together flour sugar baking powder baking soda and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles large crumbs. Stir in Raisins.
Beat egg in medium bowl, add buttermilk, beat until well blended.
Add buttermilk mixture to flour mixure; stir until mixture forms a soft dough.
Turn out dough onto a well floured surface & knead gently about 10 times.
Pat dough into a 7-inch round. Score top of dough with a knife making an X about 4-inches wide.

Bake 55-60 minutes.
