A friend just told me that if you increase your protein that you need to increase your calcium if you are a woman. Does protein affect how you absorb the calcium? What's the story?

When protein is metabolized by the body, calcium is used. Both men and women have to worry about this. But it affects women more, something to do with estrogen. So yes, be sure to get your daily recommended dose of calcium if you're on a high protein diet.

Increasing your protein consumption can increase the rate at which you excrete calcium.

"There is no question that increasing dietary protein increases urinary calcium."

"Individuals consuming high protein intakes, particularly from omnivorous sources, develop sustained hypercalciuria."
