Recording Accurate Calories Burnt

Hi Everyone,

I have been questioning the recording of my calories burnt when I do my workouts for some time now.

I have a KAM HRM and it is supposed to tell me calories I burn in a day but I haven't been really following it because it just does not seem trust worthy - and today I tested it.

I have been counting the calories I burn during my exercise activities by what is on here (MPF) and from the machines (some of which asks for your weight to record calories more accurately).

I went on something called a treadmaster - the treadmill that splits in two when walking.

I did a total of 70 minutes of cardio including a 5 minute cool down and the machine says that I burnt 922 calories whereas the KAM HRM says that I only burnt 243 calories!!! - WTF!!!!!!!

I'm at a loss here - I don't want to risk my weight loss because I am not record this all correctly.

Any suggestions????

I have always calculated about 100 calories for every mile I run. It takes me just a little bit less then 10 minutes to run a mile. This calculation is the same as mfp gives me as well as my Nike+ that I use while I run. Depending on how vigorous you were moving I would say anywhere between 700-900 would seem about right. I am not a fitness guru though.

My HRM always quotes lower calories than any machine or mfp. I figure it has a better idea of what I am actually doing and therefore is more accurate...

It kind of depends on the amount of effort you put into it. With your HRM, try a hard workout for 10 minutes and check the reading. Another day try a moderate workout for 10 minutes and check the reading. I'm sure in time you will find your general burn.

same here, I was running indoors for 20 minutes (it is cold and rainy here in oregon) I felt like I was accomplishing calorie burn, and was surprised I could run that long after never running. I used MFP 12 minute mile (slow) and it said 223 calories or so. I hurt my knee so I bought an elliptical. I do 10 minutes on that and it says 100 calories but it sure seems alot harder than my running. I cannot do 20 minutes on elliptical yet so I am wondering which was more accurate.

I figure for a good, hard workout (sweat dripping down my face, can hardly walk afterwards) I burn about 10 calories a minute, so my 60 minute elliptical is about 600 - 700 calories. It does vary every workout, but thats an average for me. It really depends on how hard you are working, when I walk the dog for about an hour it is closer to 300 calories, simply because we are walking slower so she can smell other dog's butts. I have no idea how hard you were working, but I can see either numbers being accurate.

Ok, so this is something that I also forgot to mention...

I also did some strength training - heavy lifting for 20 minutes from one exercise tthe next with a minimal break - the HRM said that I burnt 15 calories!......again......WTF!!!

And with the treadmaster - I ALWAYS work up the biggest sweat!

did I mention I have no leg strength so your guys 60 minutes ellipticals sure seems out of reach for me lol plus I am only eating 1250 cals a day plus exercise calories. ;-)

So is it safe to say that if I work up a mean sweat, keep doing it?!?
