Taste Buds Change?? Gave up sugar??

So per my doctors order I have given up sugar--I can have natural sugar like that which is found in fruits and vegetables but nothing that has 'added' sugar including sugar substitutes. I have been doing this for 4 weeks and the results are amazing! I have lost 11 pounds!! However, I have noticed that lately everything I eat tastes extremely salty to the point it dries my mouth out and the food just tastes so salty I can't stand it. For example I had some baked tostitos and they tasted so salty I thought perhaps we got a bad bag but now even other foods taste salty. Has anyone else experienced taste bud changes upon drastically reducing sugar. On the bright side things like fruit taste like candy to me!! Yum Yum--
Is there anyone else out there who has given up sugar maybe even just for lent. I would love to know about your experiences.
Thank you
Kendra

Wow I have been feeling like this too. I gave up soda about 2 weeks ago and now I feel like some foods are so salty. Weird. I wonder what other posters will say.0

i have noticed that things are overly salty or overly sweet after not adding any additional of these flavorings lately.0

I have cut out probably 70% of my sugar. I don't eat cookies, candy, cakes, muffins ect but sugar is found in so much of the food we eat and we don't even realize it. I would love to cut back even more.
Can you give me pointers? What to avoid that we eat and don't even realize there is sugar added?0 -

I have noticed this with sweets. For instance, I haven't drank soda for months but I had recently taken a sip of my husbands Mt. Dew and I couldn't drink any more if I wanted to. It was way too sweet. Almost gagged me.0 -
Interesting. I have been trying to reduce my sugar and white flour intake (only for about a week and a half now)... haven't noticed the change in taste yet... but I have been in a really good mood for the last 4 days.... and that is rare since work has been chaotic and crazy. I have read in multiple books that the reduction in un-natural sweetners and sugar in general, as well as salt, will after a couple months or two allow you to better experience the actual flavor of the food you are eating. So can't say I'm surprised! Congrats on the 11 lbs! And good for you for sticking to the doctor's orders!0

I second this. Since I joined MFP I have really become aware of how much sugar (and salt) is in so many things!! Practically anything you pick up in the grocery store has a ridiculous amount of both! It is pretty difficult for me to find convenient meals that aren't full of this stuff! I have no problems staying under my calorie goal each day, but it is VERY difficult to stay under my sugar goal. But I keep trying!0 -
I have noticed that food in general has stronger flavors to me. More salty, sweeter than I remember and just stronger flavors. I haven't had soda regularly for several years and not even an occasional one for close to a year now. When we do go out to eat I either drink water or lemon water so it was a little shocking to take a sip of DH's soda and almost gag! It was like drinking syrup!
If you're looking for hidden sugars don't forget to look for high fructose corn syrup. it's in just about everything; ketchup, salad dressing, bbq sauce, drinks, and the list goes on and on.0
