How Far Under Calorie Goal Is Too Far?

I'm sure this question has been asked many times. I have read through lots of posts about not going too far under your calorie goal for the day. But how much of a difference is considered too much? I usually wind up under mine by around 100-200, even after eating back the calories I burn during exercise, but I don't want to run the risk of going into "starvation mode" that I hear so much about. My intake limit is 1200 calories per day. I'm fairly new here, so I am still trying to get this thing figured out!

I dont eat my exercise calories. I never have.0

if you are at 1200/day then stick to that, it does not offer much wiggle room for cal cycling, I am not sure on your details but here is my recommendation which has worked for a lot of my friends on here who started out with that low a cal count.
1) do not go over 1 lb/wk weight loss, you did not put it on overnight you are not going to lose it overnight.
2) be patient, make small changes and tweak the diet accordingly. Small changed will stick, going stupid will not.
3) get the body working for you not against you which is why I advocate the clean eating diet, if you prescribe to that you will drop the weight in a healthy way and that will be true fat loss not muscle loss.
4) ditch the scale, only weigh in once a week max, any more and you are going to frustrate yourself, scales do not tell the fat loss story so you only are getting half the story which is why I call it the "dirty car salesman of the weight loss world"
5) get measurements from day one, this is where you will see positive results when the scale does not move.
6) eat back all your exercise cals its counter-intuitive to the uneducated but it works.0 -
starvation mode is a myth. do the research. i have.
you dont have to eat back those calories you burned..otherwise why bother even working out? really. you work out to burn calories to lose weight.0 -

Just read an awesome forum post explaining the whole debate on eating the calories we burn from exercise. So now I know that I need to regularly stay within no more than 500 calories over or 1000 calories under my goal including the calories earned from exercise. Check it out here... http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/10589-for-those-confused-or-questioning-eating-your-exercise-calo0

I am not big on following the starvation mode model but I do know what happens to the body when you work out and do not feed it right, it will start to feed on itself meaning muscle loss and not fat loss and slowing the metabolic rate, its not hard to understand. 99% of ppl on 1200 cals/day I can almost guarantee you are not feeding their bodies properly.0

EXACTLY!!!
Because MFP creates a built in deficit, based on your chosen loss per week goal, regardless of exercise. If you do not replace those cals added for exercise, you make the deficit larger. A larger deficit is not necessarily desirable, and is usually unhealthy and unsustainable. Rapid weight loss carries many risks. Educate yourself on those risks before attempting it.0 -
and the "starvation mode" debate, round 2,475 begins!0
-
Your goal is already set at an amount for you to loose. If you consistently eat under our goal including the calories earned from exercise you will loose faster which can be unhealthy and make the weight loss harder to maintain.0

No. NOT exactly.
MFP already calculates a deficit for you in your calorie goals. If you do not eat back at least part of your exercise calories, you increase that deficit to potentially unsafe and unsustainable levels. That said, a hundred calories here or there will not harm you. Just get reasonably close, most of the time.0 -

That is totally inaccurate. If MFP didn't already factor in a deficit, I would agree. But, with this tool, since they DO factor in a deficit already, you need to eat your exercise calories. Otherwise, you run the risk of your body not having enough fuel. This may help clear things up: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/188509-my-take-on-exercise-calories-please-read-if-you-are-new0 -

I agree here with her...1200 calories a day is just fine and okay so u don't eat your calories your burn.whatever ur choice....But look at what u are eating....It must be balanced!0 -
175 pounds lost......now.....do those numbers lie? I DO NOT STARVE MYSELF. My plate is ALWAYS full of food. Its just food that it low calorie. I have been on this journey for a little over a year and have continued to lose this weight. My husband has lost over 100! I too have done research and I just go with what works!! NOT what everyone else is saying. If you have lots of weight to lose then your body will use that excess fat for its energy. If you have little fat to burn then YES you will go into starvation mode where your body will "eat" its own muscle to exist! I still have about 40 more I would like to lose. So I dont believe I will go into starvation mode any time soon! When I reach my goal weight...THEN I will eat my exercise calories in order to maintain the weight I have lost!0

Yes, eat them back....some at least if you can't them all back everyday.......if you don't you will teach your body to live on too few calories. Not really a great way to live and enjoy life.
Much success to you.

Eat back your calories. Your body needs the fuel to continue burning the fat after you've spiked it up from your workout.
Will you lose weight by NOT eating them back? Yes. But it won't be the healthiest manner of doing so. You may actually lose weight faster by properly taking care of yourself.
Don't go TOO far under your limit. MFP is handy in the sense that if you're too far under what you should be eating, red print will come up when you hit 'complete' entry, telling you to eat more.0 -
I'd say somewhere around -5000 is probably stretching it. One might tend to get a bit crabby eating 2 turkey sandwiches on whole wheat for a day and then physically purging it on the elliptical for about 5 hours... then doing that for about 2 weeks.0

Wow thanks for all of the feedback. I understand the need to stay around the 1200 calorie mark. I just wondered if going around 200 calories under was TOO much. I exercise at least 5 days a week, and on the days I do I try to eat back most of what I've worked off.
It's just that most times at the end of the day when I still have a couple hundred left, even if I've been eating steadily ALL DAY and I just don't want any more to eat, will this hurt me long term?? Where is the point where the "starvation mode" kicks in?? I understand that everyone is different and we all metabolize out calories differently.
Again, thank you for all of the feedback!!0 -
I am usualy beween 100-200 under my goal of 1300...when my goal was 1200 for a week or two I was always 100-200 underthat too...oh well...My answer to you though has a few questions...Do you actually measure the food and know with certainty that you had exactly 1 cup of fruit or do you eyeball portion sizes? Do you log every nibble that goes in your mouth? If you don't make super accurate measurements and log every single nibble of food then I think the 100-200 under goal is a good pad to the lick of pb off the knife when I make the kids sandwiches and the 1.05 cup instead of 1 cup and the taste of this or that....that I might have during the day...if you know with certainty that you are really really accurate iwth your logging then I say eat your all of your cals to as close to your goal as possible.0

The OP wasn't about eating exercise calories. I think it was a very valid question. Most of us shoot to be under our goal but how much under is a really good question.0 -

...you know that MFP builds in a calorie deficit for you, right? Depending on how much you said you wanted to lose?0 -

If you're not hungry, don't eat.0 -
the biggest problems with undereating, or starvation mode are these: your metabolism slows down, your body will function less efficiently and you will have less overall energy, you will lose muscle mass.
The point where this effect happens depends on the person. A large overweight male can handle a much larger calorie defict than a smaller woman with only a couple dozen pounds to lose. Heavy dudes can eat 2500 cal and still have deficits over 1000 calories. If your goal is 1200 cals and you earn exercise calories you eat them back or else your net calories will be too low. Creating a large deficit on a low calorie diet will have negative effects, starvation mode effects.0 -

not a bright suggestion
Drink a glass of milk. . .I can easily up my calories by 130-140 with a good brand of milk, and up my protein and calcium intake for the day at the same time0 -

Not diving into the eat/don't eat workout calories battle again--I'm learning that it works for some, not for others.
That being said, your goal is exactly that--a goal. It is not a limit you should be under. It is the amount of calories you should eat. Since all calories you eat and burn are estimates, 100 over or under probably does not mean much at the end of the day. But if you are typically trying to meet your goal, you will probably average pretty close.0 -
I have lost every week eating back my exercise calories and being aprox 50 / 100 cals under.
The one week I was eating 300 cals under I lost nothing at all...0 -

Those last 20 are brutally difficult to lose and finding the correct deficit is extremely hard. You may have to start eating those cals then.0 -
Well it really depends on your goal. I personally do not eat my exercise calories I don't even track them. I also eat primal so that being said I just eat good food for me and move more that's it. Their is so much arguing on this sight about eat exercise cals or don't, starvation mode, your eating to little eat more. Personally I research what I want to know and I don't take Antibes word for it. You have to figure out what works for you. I am a firm beloved in eat the best foods for your body, move more and don't eat if your not hungry even if that means you skipped a meal. That's it.0

My goal is 1250 as my BMR is 1248. Once I add my exercise that number goes up to anywhere from 1880-over 2000. Once I eat everything for the day, my NET is back around 1250. When I first started this about 12 days ago I weighed in at 120-121, at the beginning of this week I weighed in at 117.8.0
