Since I have been counting calories, I have been waking up in the middle of the night starving and having the worst hunger pangs!!! I eat a small snack before bed and I am not hungry before bed. The other problem is I am starving in the morning when I get up but I can't eat because of my thyroid medicine.... Any suggestions on why this is happening to me? This never happened before when I didn't count calories.. Thanks

Oh and I have been drinking water before bed to see if that helps and it doesn't. When this happens it makes me feel so sick that I have to eat something. I have been eating a few almonds and OJ and that does help.

I don't have an answer but I empathize...I deliver papers early in the a.m. around 3ish...and I feel hungry! But I like to weigh myself in the mornings before breakfast so I try not eat during my deliveries...GOOD QUESTION!
  • How many calories are you eating per day?

Are you eating protein with your late-evening snack? That will stay with you longer than anything else.

Also, are you eating right up to your calorie minimum? Remember that MFP already accounts for the "cutting back" you need to do to lose weight, so you need to eat to your minimum, ESPECIALLY if you do hard workouts...

My guess is taht you are not eating enough during the day or eating foods that fill you up. Are you able to eat something when you wake up hungry or will that interfere with your meds? Make sure your snack before bed is something filling that digests slowly so it will last longer at night. I have gotten up at tnight to have a little something when I wake up that hungry, Not sure if this helps or not.... GOod luck

My Net has been around 1300. I have it set at 1430 a day, then whatever I burn from exercise I try to eat most of it..

It depends what the small snack your having is. You need something that will keep your blood sugar steady through the night. This should be something like wholemeal toast. Look up other low GI foods. High sugar foods such as cereals, bananas or any other high sugar item will make you blood sugar levels spike then fall through the floor. It may also be your medication or if you have an over-active thyroid; it could be your medication dose has droppe during the night. Try the food option first then talk to your doctor.

My problem is that I don't eat breakfast til late like 10, because I have to wait after meds and I have a 8 month old baby that I take care of first in the morning. So by the time breakfast comes around its 10. Then lunch I'm not starving because I just ate.

I'm eating a "treat" at night. Usually a skinny cow ice cream sandwich. Thyroid is under active.

Try eating protein with some carbs or eating a bowl of cereal before bed. If you are still getting up in the middle of the night - try eating something small like a banana - they are filling and good for you.

I too am starving in the morning! To help I have set an alarm for earlier just to take my thyroid medication then I go back to bed. The other thing that you could do is take your meds at night (only if you eat the snack early enough - chat with you doc too). There has been a study done with taking thyroid meds at night and that it is better absorbed because of the prolonged eating.

Just a suggestion - but before you switch to night time discuss with your doctor. I am thinking of doing this to see if it helps with the flucuation of my meds. Keep us posted on what you decided to do! smile:
  • I think the skinny cow ice cream treat is the wrong thing. It will give you a quick fix but work out of your system too soon - which is why you are back to staving in the morning.

I agree with the others that you should be eating something that will stay with you longer - and protein lasts the longest.

I also agree that you should talk to your doctor, but also think you should look hard at what you are eating from dinner on. I think you need to budget so you have room for some extra calories at night. You probably would be better to have a small meal with some unrefined carbs and protein before you go to bed. Then a snack with some more unrefined carbs and protein for when you wake up. - I'm thinking like an open face sandwich -

Sometimes I make a snack-sandwich with a slice of glycemic/diabetic toast, a serving of turkey ham light, lettuce, tomato and mustard and I have a good, balanced snack of complex carbohydrates and proteins of around 125-150 calories (depending on exactly what brand bread and other ingredients you use)

Good luck - please let us know how it works out
