So today I got the results back from my blood work and it turns out I have an under active thyroid - the Dr. wants to put me on medication. I have to say, I was a little happy about hearing this. I feel like (besides the occasional binges/slip ups :embarassed:) I eat relatively healthy and exercise and I have such a hard time losing weight. I lost about 30 lbs. before I even joined MFP and that took 2 years!

Does anyone else have this condition? Did the medication help you to lose weight and have more energy?

The tyroid medication isn't a magic fix all as far as losing weight. Although I have had a lot of different issues in conjuction with finding out that my thyroid is slightly off. I wasn't eating (less than or about 1200 cal) exercising like crazy so it is no wonder my metabolism isn't doing its thing.

Take care to make sure you are eating enough calories and the pill should help you have more energy

I have Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid) also. I am currently on synthroid 200. I gained a lot of weight before being dignosed. I have tried for years to lose weight with no success. After joining MTP, it helped to have a plan to stick too. Sometimes I plateau but I know if i follow the plan, my weight loss will pick back up. Down 50 pounds so far. It is kind of frustrating and it may take you a little longer than most but you will get there.

My sister has this problem and is taking meds for it. However, she has never had a problem with weight because she has always eaten healthy and exercised. She only noticed because she was so lethargic. She would fall asleep under her desk at work and could never figure out why. She now always can tell when she needs an adjustment because she starts feeling that lagging feeling and goes and gets tested, but when she is at the right level her energy level is much higher.

My aunt put on a lot of weight due to stress. Finding out her husband was on drugs and separating from him and her father dying all in one year. She has always been very skinny. She found out that she had a thyroid problem and started taking the meds. As pilotgirl2007 said-it isn't the magic fix. My aunt is still heavier than she would like and has a number of other problems. It is all about diet and exercise.
  • I had a low end of normal test . An MRI picked up a growth on my thyroid that could not be ruled out cancerous even after 2 painful biopsies. I had the whole left side of my thyroid removed and was put on levothyroxin which had to be increased once already due to sub-optimal TSH & T4 results. I was due another test several months back but lost my job and insurance so there was NO WAY I could afford the costly test on my measly unemployment checks. I have not lost any weight and have in fact gained even more despite dietary changes. Keep in mind if you take a thyroid medication you will be required to have blood tests several times a year. Thyroid medication is nothing to play around with and dosing should NEVER be adjusted by the patient nor abruptly stopped. ( I am a nurse) Best wishes on reaching your goal.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone had problems conceiving because of this? I really want to start a family soon and read that it could cause infertility.

My sister already had her first child when she found out and she was able to have two more after diagnosed without problems.

I also have a friend who had hers removed and was put on meds and shortly after became pregnant.
