Conversation with My Spin Instructor

This morning, as I do every Saturday morning (for the last month and a half), I went to Spin class. I love this class. I go 3 times a week, and then do a session on my own with "My Spin Coach," an album you can purchase for your MP3 device.

I've been stuck in the 2nd phase of weight loss for quite some time:

"Phase 2. Reality setting in.
At about week 3 to a month or so, people suddenly realize that they are no longer dropping 8, 6, or even 4 lbs a week. This is a crutial phase in your journey. Expect this, it is natural. You have shocked your body by changing both eating habits and exercise routine. Now it has had a little while to become used to the new lifestyle, it's going to compensate. Your body still doesn't believe it's permenant yet, so it will still try to store some fat, so now that it knows how to regulate it's new metabolic levels, it tryies to store fat in earnest. It's not uncommon for people to hit a wall here, no loss for weeks. Expect this as well."

The scale is not moving much, despite making sure that I am eating what my body needs and drinking plenty of water, all while not seeing any loss or much loss to speak of. It's daunting, but I keep on keeping on. And now the routine is finally solidified.

So this morning, my awesome spin instructor sees my HRM, that had falled off me during an intense climb, on the floor and asks, "So you got a HRM, when did you get that." We proceed to talk for a little while and I complain about how my HRM doesn't calibrate calories burned, and how I am bummed about that. He then says, "it doesn't seem to matter much, you are melting away. You look incredible, and you have obviously lost a lot of weight since your first day of spin!"

That was just the boost I needed. I know that I have shrunk some. The measurements speak volumes. All my clothes are looser. But it is so much more inspiring to hear someone else comment on the progress you have made. We don't always see what others see in us. This was just the boost I needed!

I'm just finishing my 3rd week, so this is timely advice if things look stuck tomorrow (my weigh-in day). :embarassed:

Awesome to hear isn't it? Here's what I've had to learn, it drives me nut.. but hope it helps you. I have been the same relative weight since November - I "want' to lose 7 more lbs, just to make me happy when I see the scale. I have however, lost 1 clothing size doing P90X and I decided to spend the $10 on calipers - I've lost 2-4% more body fat doing insanity. My "weight" hasn't changed, but I'm turning into muscle alone. It's been a struggle for me to comprehend. I can see the muscle development, but when the scale doesn't change it can be discouraging. Don't let the scale not moving depress you - there are totally body changes occurring if you are exercising. Did you take measurement? Maybe it's the time to make sure you have those.

I did take measurements. I have lost 7 inches total in my arms, chest, waist, hips, and thighs since starting my workout routine. My next measurement date is April 5th. I am only taking them once a month!
