My weakness - Wine

I love wine. No question. But I know that it's completely, without a doubt hindering any chance at weight loss. I'll try to start with a glass, then go for a second, then a third, and before I know it I've had a half a bottle. It just relaxes me after work. It's to the point where I'm just assuming I'll have some wine after work. Anyway alcohol is notorious for making people eat poorly and I know that's what's happening here. Not to mention I take anti-depressants and should not have alcohol to begin with. So... how can I just stay away from it? I know it's simple - don't buy any... I need to lose 80+ lbs and want to do so by my birthday in December. Any advice from other wine enthusiasts?

I TOTALLY concur and wish I had an easy answer for you! I suffer the same weakness. Actually I've been TRYING to drink more wine so I can ween off of VODKA! LOL0

Sweetie, please don't take offense...do you have a dependance issue? I apologize if I sound harsh I don't mean to, I come from a long line of dependance issues. I like to have a drink once and a while too...but I've put the kabosh on it because when I do drink it halts my weight loss.
I'm adding you as a friend if you don't mind feel free to message me anytime, and if you'd like to talk about this in depth away from the board - you are more than welcome...
Blessings,

I love wine too! If I am going to have a glass of wine, I usually make sure I have plenty of calories left for it, and I usually replace a snack with it. I would say the safest way to drink wine while trying to lose weight would be to just have one glass a day. Sometimes it is hard not to have that second glass, but if you are diligent with just enjoying the one glass it will help you to appreciate the wine, and not just use it as a crutch to deal with stress or other issues that may be going on at work or with your personal life. When work stresses me out, I have started taking walks. A short 10 or fifteen minute walk in the afternoon with my ipod has really helped me focus better.
Good luck to you!

I LOVE WINE. I have the same problem. And yes, it really does stunt your weight loss. Not to mention, as soon as I have two glasses, I get the munchies. And tipsy me starts thinking, "Oh, one little bag of popcorn isn't so bad!" Which turns into cookies, and ice cream, and...you get the picture
I've stopped drinking it for the most part. I'll allow myself a glass or two on the weekends now, but none at all on weekdays. And it wasn't easy! It was (and is) kind of a work in progress. Allowing myself a different treat helped a lot - I started eating a piece of Ghirardelli dark chocolate instead.
Also, whenever I really want a glass of wine on the weekdays, I just say no and make myself drink a lot of water. After a few glasses of water, the wine doesn't sound quite so tempting.
My last trick - go to bed earlier! Haha. My boyfriend and I have started getting in bed by 9 p.m. or so these days, and that really helps. There just isn't enough time to drink any wine after work/school.0 -
I know it is hard. I love my Red wine too! I seem to try and cut it out when I am focused on loosing then I take a break. I lost my weight in 20 lb intervals with a brief brake between. Focusing on maintaining. I find if you can't cut it out for a few months, just cut down to allowing yourself 1 Glass a day or every other day and include it in your calorie intake. You can't not have something you enjoy or you will feel you will deprive yourself and the weight loss efforts got the opposite way. Even walk longer or in crease your activity. Just to contradicted the alcohol as it is a metabolism suppressant. It is worth the try. But, knowing it will only be cut out for a while is something you can use to look forward too! I know once you start loosing and moving more you look forward to it and you use walking for a relaxant instead. Make it a habit to go for a walk after work..... :flowerforyou:0

Hi there, I can understand your predicament. Before I started calorie counting it was usual for me to have a gin and tonic in the evenings when I got in, followed by a glass of wine (or two!) with dinner. I didn't want to give either up so had to make some choices.
I've swapped the regular G&T for a single measure gin with slimline tonic, lots of ice and lemon and sip it slowly. For the wine I bought smaller glasses that only hold a 175ml measure. If I have white wine I try and add a dash of sparkling water to make it a spritzer and it it's red then I'll have a single glass and make it last an hour. I tell myself I can have another for the next hour if I really want it but often, by making it last, I feel I've drunk more than I have and choose not to have the second glass.
I hope this helps. Best of luck.

I just posted the same concern on my TeamBeachBody account a few days ago. Replies were just drink one glass, and the other reply was...this is concerning, go see your doctor.
Needless to say, I do too love wine, but I do Insanity and I am logging everything I eat and drink so all this hard work would be a waste if i cannot at least cut back for the 60 days I am doing my program. So Saturday night I had beer, but only 2. Stayed within my caloric intake. Last night, no alcohol at all! That's a new one for me. Took the money I would normally spend on wine and took myself on a long walk and saw a good movie.
The guilt about it all is what had me exhausted. We could be buddies and try to support each other on this! How bought treating yourself to one free day a week? Also 1 glass of good wine a night will not screw things up. Maybe go buy one of those little single serving bottles that equal one glass. I tried that and it works cause mostly I don't wanna go out and get more after I am settled.
I also drink a cup of Kava Kava tea at night to get to sleep because I am use to conking out on the wine.....heheh.
Good luck and lets buddy up and beat this!

Thanks Jo! I too do the spritzer thing and love it! I like your ideas though!0

I also love wine and still drink it but budget calories for it. This guarantees I won't drink too much! I do allow for a few glasses in an evening from time to time but I make sure not to exceed my maintenance calories so the damage is limited. Would I have lost more weight so far if I didn't drink at all? Sure, probably, but I am OK with my progress so far. If this really is a lifestyle change and NOT a diet, then for me that includes incorporating wine into my diet without going overboard. If I don't learn how to do it now, I'll just have to learn how to do it when I am at goal weight.
Some people have a weakness for soda or cookies. I have a weakness for wine! We all have our vices...0 -
Yup, I'm another!
My current plan is I have 2 days a week with no booze, 2 where I dont drink before 9 pm.....and I'm still working on the remaining 3!0 -
I totally know what you mean. I try to hold off on wine until close to dinner time. Usually after dinner I really don't want anymore wine. If I hold off I pretty much stick to just one glass.0

I love wine as well...and, well, really all drinks that are bad for me. The trick here for me is not just moderation however. Let's face it - having just one glass can be really tough, but actually just that one glass is hindering you more than just by adding calories.
When your body goes to metabolize and break down fats, and it will actually process the other bad things before stored fat. Unfortunately...stored fat is usually last on the list for the liver and kidneys. The first thing it has to work to process is any alcohol in your system, followed by any chemicals, excess vitamins or badly/extras in your foods. Once that's done, THEN it gets to the fats.
That being said, I always remind myself when I'm drinking that as long as this is in my system (and for awhile afterwards) my body isn't burning fat! It's storing. I limit myself to drinking no more than 1-2 nights a week, and when I do, I plan ahead for it. Be realistic - save up calories through the week if you want, but understand that you might drink 3-4 glasses on that one night out, enjoy them, but plan for them, and rev up your metabolism the next day to get it out of your system and back on the path to weightloss.
Almost every person (that I've talked to) who has lost a significant amount of weight, when asked what their biggest challenge was, will say "Giving up the beer/wine/liquor/insert vice here". Just understand if you don't want to go cold turkey that it affects your body on a large scale and will stall you temporarily. Good luck!0 -
I was the same way with my wine. And I so loved to savor it! What I did, its it really is more of a habit than anything. Start measuring 6oz servings and you can physically see how little it is. Then figure out the cals for those 6 oz. It usually comes in around 90 to 120 cals per 6oz. glass. Then add it to your diary and you see how fast the cals add up. When I noticed after a while I was drinking more wine calories than eating food nutrient calories, I stopped all together. I can now be happy with one glass when I go out for dinner. Now mind you I go out occasionally with friends, but I eat very healthy the days before and conserve the calories the day of. I hope this helps. Once I stopped drinking the wine each weekend, the weight came off much faster.0
