Is it wrong?

Does anyone think it's wrong to be investing in getting a dog as a motivational companion for working out? I'm planning on adopting one from an animal shelter but it feels selfish in nature considering the prime motivating factor in adopting it will be for my own benefit. I mean i'll definitely care for it and give it love i've had dogs as pets before well my family has had dogs so I know they require attention and care which i am more than willing to provide.

Just don't hear many people acquiring a pet to help their exercise habits?

I think it'a great idea! You get a willing exercise partner and the new doggie gets a home and someone to love and care for him. Win win all the way!
  • I think it's a great idea! Gives you motivation to get a work out in, because nothing sucks more than bein out there going at it alone AND you give a dog a great home, plus dogs have lots of energy and actually need owners who walk/play with them, so it will ensure you're out there gettin your cardio on :) go for it!

No its not wrong. As long as you take care of and love it. I looked after a friends dog for a few days and really enjoyed the walks. I havent felt the motivation to go out walking since; so go for it!

Dogs are great companions and work out partners! I have a dachshund, and while his legs may be too short to take for long walks or a short run, he loves going to bike rides in his trailer!

Well, all pets are for our own benefit, really, if we're honest!

The dog will force you to get out the door at least 3-4 times a day, yes. You'll meet a lot of your neighbors, too!

But keep in mind that the average cost of a dog is $1,000 USD a year once you factor in veterinary bills, feeding, training, boarding, toys, supplies, etc. The first year tends to be very expensive and so do the senior years when health may be in decline.

If you can afford it and you have the time, go for it!

And keep in mind that the dog can't regulate his body temp as well as you can. They are far more susceptible to heat, so be very careful and either carry water or plan water stopswhen it starts to get warm. ;)

Thanks heaps guys and thanks for the tip about carrying water for it on runs Atlantique. I'm hoping to get an Australian Cattle Dog cross so surely he/she will be active enough for me to keep up with and stay motivated. Just seems more fun than going to a gym where i spend close to $1000 a year anyway. I was just feeling bad cause I dunno lol, seems selfish to me "owning" a dog as a workout partner and companion. Then again it's also better than the poor thing being put to sleep.
