I was wondering what you all do. I get up around 8am normally and try to work out right away and then eat.
My hubby is in the army and he has always done PT first( but that is at 6am ) and then eaten breakfast. He told me that once her starts out working out his hunger goes away. I have found out that that's the case for me to.
What do you do? Eat first or work out first in the am?

Aerobic work out first then I have a protein or cereal bar and then do my weight lifting.
  • I have to eat before I work out because I am usually starving. I guess maybe if I woke up at 5 am it would be better for me since I have to get my boys up and ready for their day! And at 5 am I am not thinking about eating. It's just hard to get up that early haha. I think thats my goal for next week...

Dr O'z had a program about a month back that suggested working out before you eat will actually burn more fat vs. after eating. I work out in evening during the week, and a.m. on weekends and I do think it makes a difference. I think it really depends on you and what you can tolerate. Try it one day and see if it works for you.

I am in the military as well. I have grown so accustomed to working out and then eating afterwards. I always heard that it's better because you are still burning and basically that first meal is a FREEBIE!!! Good luck;)

Until very recently I would always go on a completely empty stomach so as to ensure that I tapped into my fat stores for energy. Like your husband, I do find that feelings of hunger go away once you start working out. After a few instances of feeling really dizzy, however, I have begun eating a banana and having coffee about 1/2 hour before I work out. The sugar from a banana is easily accessible and for energy and doesn't give me that full feeling or cause me to cramp. Then I have a "real breakfast" post workout.

Id drink some juice or eat a piece of fruit or something...just for the immediate energy it would supply but Ive always been told to eat a protein laden meal within an hour after working out to feed the muscles that are in the process of self-healing

IF I get myself up in the morning to work out, I might have about 1/2 cup of coffee. Anything else makes me cramp so I tend to eat afterwards!

I have read that you should eat a banana before working out. That helps you to have more energy and burn calories more efficiently.

With that said, I workout first thing in the morning. I have a thyroid disease and the medication has to be taken on an empty stomach. You are supposed to wait at least one hour after taking it before eating. So I fill up that one hour with working out.

I personally prefer to eat at least a small snack before a workout, otherwise I get to a point where I "run out of juice", once that happens my performance drops and the workout becomes much more of a struggle than it needs to be.
