Inches VS Pounds

Sorry if this topic has been brought up before...
I have been giving it my all for the last 3 weeks. In the first 2 weeks I lost 3 lbs and was so happy. Then today I weigh myself (I only weigh once a week Friday's) only to have stayed the same, so needless to say I was very upset. I thought about just giving up, I was so sad... I just knew i would have a loss this week. I have been eating good, exercising and my clothes are feeling much better on me...
I did not take measurements before I started, I only weighed myself. Is anyone else loosing inches but not pounds and if so how long before you lost both..
What I have decided to do is I am no longer going to weigh myself for a while. My new goal at this point is to work on wearing a certain size rather than weighing a certain amount. I know I will be happy when I can say I wear this size rather than I weight this amount....
I would like to hear from others though that are having this same issue..
Thanks
Gina

im having the same battle. my weight is hardly wavering, but ive been measuring myself for the past 3 weeks since ive taken on jillian michaels 30 day shred. When I weighed in on Tuesday I had gained 3 lbs from the previous week (i know my calorie intake hasn't been stellar), but when i measured, I had lost at least 2 inches. So now, I've only lost 1 lb since beginning, but lost 9 inches.
I think I'm about to forget the scale. At least not take it so seriously, and focus on the measurments.
Either way, keep up the great work! We should be proud of ourselves! At the end of the (weigh-in) day, I'm always happy that I've made the changes that I have and I'm not where I was 3 months ago.0 -
I am. One day I saw a 3lb weight gain, so I measured myself and compared to the measurements I took 10 days before, I lost 2 inc. around my waist and 1.5 inches around my hips.
A lot of it I think is because you are gaining muscles from working out (or at least in my case) so the scale is reflecting that as well.0 -
Keep doing what you are doing. Your body is still adjusting to the changes. What you first lost is probably water weight - especially if you're drinking lots of water. Keep an eye on sodium. That will show up on the scale overnight.
Just make sure you are eating enough (NET 1200). Eat enough of your exercise calories to keep you at or above 1200 and you should be good. Your body needs fuel for the exercise.
And treat the number on the scale as just that. A number. It can mean anything and it fluctuates daily. Even exercise can cause a slight water gain afterwards.
Someone at a healthy weight on calorie restriction and doing lots of cardio will see a loss on the scale but a lot of it will be muscle mass, not fat mass. (Weight lifting can help that). Unless you are weight lifting you aren't gaining muscle. It's very hard to women to "gain" muscle. It's all we can do to maintain it while on a diet.
Go by how your clothes fit and how you feel.
I've only lost 7.5 out of the 10 I was trying for (I've gotten away from weight loss and focusing more on weight lifting these days. Weight lifting and scale don't go together very well.) but I'm wearing pants that didn't fit when I was lighter than I am now. I can thank exercise for that.0 -
Thanks!
I just started the Julian 30 day shred on Monday so maybe that is why I did not loose this week...

Some weeks or even months I lose inches and not weight. I want the scale to move but in the end it's the inches that matter, right?
My advice would be to take the measurements starting now. It is really helpful to have a secondary motivation and way to measure success.
I also have had smaller clothes in my closet that I've used for goals. I tried things on until they fit noting each time how close I had come. From can't pull it over my hips, to almost zipping, to yeah it actually is wearable. It helped to keep me motivated.0 -
Hey Gina..... I and a few of my friends can def relate to this!!!...... When I first started on 1/4/11 I lost 4 lbs the first week and was soo happy then the following 2 week weigh in's I did not lose a single lb and was soooo discouraged b/c I was doing everything right and no weight loss....I just kept on telling myself just keep it up b/c it could be water weight muscle gain etc.. and then the 3rd week I had a 5 lb loss and was totally excited and happy and just loved my scale again!!! I have been losing 1 - 2 lbs each week with 16 lb loss so far ....I don't let the scale get to me anymore and also try certain jeans on every 2 weeks or so to see how many inches I've lost.........So hang in there and don't let that scale make you give up b/c it will come off trust me!!!! Good Luck!!0

I just had a NSV(Non scale victory). The scale has been stuck for weeks. I put on a pair of jeans and they bagged out right away and having my hands full while making dinner I had to have my husband pull up my pants. I went jean shopping the next day and picked up a size smaller jean and thought,(who am I kidding) I haven't warn this size in years. THEY FIT!!! I think at times the scale can be our worst enemy. Fluid retention can cause a 4 lb. gain. I would keep weighing but keep that in mind and don't be hard on yourself. You will have NSV's0

Happy for you.....
I am gonna keep an eye on the scale too, but going to shoot for a certain clothing size.......
I feel so much better after talking to everyone on here today that I don't even care that the scale did not move today...
I am gonna do this...
Thank you all....0 -
I have had the same issues since Jan when I started MFP. I have lost 6 lbs. However, I have dropped 2 pants sizes, I have worn a skirt this week (which has been 5-7 years, and it's a single digit size). And I have dropped a bra size. While it is upsetting to see the scale at a standstill, MFP has taught me that inches are more important than the weight. It will come off, after your toned.....0
