so i've read over and over again that you need to change up your workout otherwise your body will adapt. i pretty much just stick to the elliptical but what do you guys do to change up your workout?

also, which burns more fat, aerobic or anaerobic exercise?

I try to find work out dvd's that have interval training. Prevention has a good one that goes 3 min of cardio, 2 min of toning, and 1 min of core. You do your legs, chest, butt, back, arms and sholders, so there is 6 of the 3,2,1 intervals. it is called Prevention 3,2,1

I use different machines at the gym, and I vary the programs on them too. One day, I'll do the elliptical, the next, I go on the stair stepper, the next, I'll do the treadmill. I never just set the pace and incline and leave it there the whole time. I'll change it up throughout, or I'll pick a program that does it for me. And I try to fit in a class or two during the week as well, like today, I did water aerobics, on Saturdays, I do a lifting class, tomorrow I'm going to try a Slo-Robics class.

  • Hi Y'all,

I have been reading all your posts, and I've decided to try to do my 30 minute walk every day, for as long as I can.

Before making this decision, I have an artificial hip and bursitis in the same leg. I would do my "walk" and spend 2 days in the house with an ice bag. Well, after reading all your posts, I am trying to "walk through" the pain and hope that it will become easier as I go along.

When I started my goal was only to improve my health. With help from MFP.com, my blood sugars are back to normal. So, yeah I want to drop a lot of weight and to do that I have to be able to increase the exercise.

Greenie, you might want to check with your Dr. and make sure it's ok to work through the pain. Maybe instead of walking, an even lower impact exercise like the elliptical? I'm all for you making the decision, I just don't want to see you really get hurt. Or what about smaller walks 2 or 3 times a day, would spacing it out help with your hip?

which burns more fat, aerobic or anaerobic exercise?

    Aerobic means "with oxygen"
    Anaerobic means "without oxygen"

It's not even possible to do an entire workout in your anaerobic zone, as anaerobic energy supplies are only good for, maybe, 2 minutes at most... which is why most people who want to hit that zone do interval training.
That being said, however, fat isn't even an energy source used during anaerobic exercise. So, do aerobic exercise, and then maybe add a few anaerobic bursts in there to round it out... but you are going to burn fat during aerobic exercise.

I've been running for years and it did nothing for me :(
Added mostly resistance training adn count calories - started to see results!

    But that's me, I guess :)
  • Thank you, Robin. I will check with my doctor.
