How many SHOULD this serve

Knowing what the "right" portion size is, isn't something i'm very good at.

So here is the stew that my boyfriend just threw in the Crockpot...I'm not too excited about the Lipton soup mix being in there. He says it's good but I'm stuck on the HIGH amount of sodium it has!

about 1.5 lbs of lean stew meat
1 cup of diced carrots
2 garlic cloves
.5 cup of raw onion
1 stalk of celery
2 cups of roasted potatoes (not sure if I logged that right)
and 1 packet of lipton onion soup mix

When I enter the recipe as serving 6 people it says:
Calories- 287, Carbs-9, Fat- 6, Protein- 25, Sodium- *huge sigh* 1290mg.

i would go by how many people (servings) the meat serves

When I don't know the serving size for a meal like that I normally get 1 cups out and sit with my scale and separate the meat/veg etc and weigh or measure it. I go by what the package of that item says so if the meat said 1/4 of a cup I'd measure out 1/4 of a cup of meat. so on and so forth...

It would depend on the serving size. I try and estimate how many cups there is and then make 1 cup a serving. That way when I serve it I can take how many cups I want and know I am logging it fairly correctly.

Yikes on the sodium, but otherwise looks good!

I usually take a serving to mean a cup of something. Try portioning out the stew with a measuring cup while you're putting it away into tupperware or something. Then count how many cups you get out of it. If a cup isn't doing it, then try 1.5 cups. That's the most I would go though. I usually serve myself a plate, then put the rest away before I eat so that I can see how many more meals I get out of it (and because I hate to leave things on the stove, even just while I eat).

    Good luck!

when i make soups and sauces i just measure how much i made in total and then divide it evenly into a portion that makes sense to me... and call that a serving... doesn't really matter how many 'servings' of it you use per meal, so long as you record it acurately.

ie: my soup ladle holds exactly 2/3 c... so if i use that as my serving size (6 cups of soup made divided by 2/3 c per serving) i know there are 9 'servings' of soup available, and i might ed up have 1.5 or 2 'servings' for a meal depending on the rest of what i might be having *S*
    (hope that makes sense)

but yeah... soup mixes are super bad for sodium ...i never use them anymore at all :(
  • I would have left out the soup mix.. that's where the sodium is.. and used a combo of SALT-FREE seasonings.. like Ms. Dash.. She offers a Nice Variety ... ALL sodium free :-).. Otherwise .. It's the PERFECT MEAL ,, Yummo !!
