To those who've lost large amounts of weight....

Can I ask when the weight loss started to slow down?
What was your typical weekly lost?
Did you gain at all or consistantly lose?

I have been on my new regime since New Year's Day and I've lost 47 lbs of the 100 lbs I'm trying to shift. I won't lie, I feel great and having just bought new jeans 4 inches smaller I can really see the difference.

Where I'm starting to worry is that this week I've only lost 1 lb and the rate of loss is really slowing down, even though my workouts get harder and my diet gets better.

Any advice would be welcome.....

If it helps at all, I'm a 29 year old male, 6ft1 with a starting weight of 303 lbs.

  • I hit a plateu at my first 50lbs, and about every 20lbs after that. it is frustrating but don't give up. Your body can afford to loose more when there is more to loose. at 300lbs 50lbs is nothing to someones body, at 150lbs it is a big deal. You will start to slow down now on your weightloss and may even have weeks where you only loose 1-2lbs then the next you will loose 5... When I first started i was loosing 4-5lbs a week now I am down to 1-3. And when I hit my 80lbs gone i started this, loose 5 gain 3 thing even though i wasn't changing anything, but i just keep pressing on :) I keep telling myself that it's because I am gaining muscle haha

Good jib on the 47lbs!!! I

  • I lost 75 lbs over the course of about 18 months for the most part pretty steady, did have a few times where I would put on a few ounces and then start losing again....Really mad at my self for slacking after losing all that weight and gaining 25 back. Found this site and so far am back on the road to healthy. I do think you will not lose as fast as you were but the good news is that men seem to lose quicker than women. Good Luck and great job!

how long is your plateau been? I have lost 50 lbs in 5months and my weight loss has been pretty consistent. I am assuming you are starting to lift so that is probably looking as though you are not losing cause obvisouly the muscle weighs more than fat rule starts to apply. I having been losing 10lbs a month. But the last 2 months it looks as though i wasn't going to hit the 10lbs and the last week or so it came off at the very end. I wouldn't let the plateau bother you. as long as the jeans are always fitting loose then you are doing fine.

Losing 47 pounds since New Years is great! However, that averages to about 4 pounds per week, meaning you are burning an extra (roughly) 800-1000 calories per day. After a while, your body will start to resist too much fat being burned by going into "starvation mode" and storing as much fat as possible. A single pound a week doesn't look like much, but I'd set your weight loss goal for a pound a week and stick with that from now on. The worst thing you can do for weight loss is get worried about it. This is based on my understanding as a person, not an expert.

I never really hit a plateau. HOWEVER. I periodically just stopped working out so hard and stop tracking everything i ate so closely i rarely gained anything back with in a pound or two (with one exception) and then I would just pick it back up a month or so later. I could feel myself getting burned out so i just took a few steps back and started again. I don't ever really remember loosing large numbers on the scale though. I started this process a few years ago now and most of my weight was lost prior to mpf.

Mine slowed at around 30 pounds. The first 30 came off at a pretty steady 2lbs per week loss. The next five came off okay and the every single pound since then has been a hard fought battle. Though, for a few months during that time I was losing inches even though the pounds weren't coming off.

Hmm, I am certainly not the norm here, but I'll tell you my stats anyway. I'm 25, female, starting weight was 250. I currently weigh 142.6, for a loss of 107.4 pounds. I have never plateaued. I've only gained weight while on honeymoon and it came off during the first week when we were back at home. I have had to force myself to lose weight more slowly, because my body seems to have no trouble losing weight. Since the beginning of January, I have been adding calories. I was at 1200 and moved up to 1400-something and am now up to 1600 and am working very hard to net 1600 calories a day, because I am about 3 pounds from my initial goal, but I've changed that to ten pounds lower than the original goal. Even after a really awful weekend, I managed to lose 0.2 pounds this week, but I lost 2 pounds last week, so it averages out pretty well. I really only want to lose .5 pounds a week, so I am going to make sure to reach my net this week and see what happens.

By the way, 1 pound a week is great! That's the recommended amount, anyway. If you are still losing, don't worry about a plateau. Just keep working on it and you'll manage to get there sooner or later. I know it's hard to be patient, because I just have this belly left and it frustrates me to no end. I want it gone now, but that's not going to happen, so I have to keep working hard and hope it goes eventually. Congratulations on your loss so far.

This is exactly what I did, which, I think, is why we never plateaued.

After 59 pounds lost, I have yet to plateau, tho I did gain a couple while on vacation last week. However, I can have a week of 1.8 loss, followed by 5.7 loss the next. It is very erratic but as long as it a loss I don't care. Eventually I expect the loss to be around 1 lb per week, especially since I just started working on strength training and toning...... if it is possible to tone 380 pounds.
